    As a Vaselines album, V can't help but be disappointing. None of the unpredictable magic they used to be able to conjure, in the distant past and on Sex with an X, is on display, and they seem to be resigned to the fact that they are just a good rock band now.

    V For Vaselines has been released a few months too late, for V For Vaselines is a summer album.

    Slightly less shambolic guitar playing and overall song craft seems reasonable for two musicians now decades into their careers. Lots of lyrical double entendres are a request, but if they can’t be ribald, then witty will suffice. It’s really only at the third post that V for Vaselines falls.

    The tunes offer a smooth enough ride, but The Vaselines aren’t really stretching themselves here.

    The tracks begin to bleed together way before the halfway point of the album and there's not a single surprise to be had throughout.
