    It's Frog Eyes, this music rambles all over the shop in an artfully dramatic foppish style. You'll need patience, and plenty of it, but if you've got the stomach for the fight this packs ample rewards. Only flashes of 'something close to genius' though.

    However carefully crafted the words or melodies may be, there’s an air of anything-can-happen to Frog Eyes songs. They are certainly always haring off in unexpected directions.

    The resulting Violet Psalms is more measured, but no less distinctive (and destructive) than previous outings, delivering all of the architectural twists and turns, fragmented rhythms, and surreal narratives that have come to define the group over the years.

    A return to/remaining within form where Carey’s freewheeling guitar and (thankfully) sandblasted and virtuosic voice beam at us from our speakers in triumphant denouement.
