It’s a record that’ll please newcomers and existing fans alike, but, given the backstory and heart poured into ‘Wait Til I Get Over’, the record existing for Jones feels like a triumph. Whether or not he brings these sounds or elements back to the group is yet to be seen, but this record will shake the walls of Hillaryville and beyond.

These are deeply personal songs that chart the different kinds of emotions he’s working through, whether it’s to do with the affairs of the heart or the turmoil of the outside world; it’s also a wildly ambitious record that takes its musical cutes from Black American popular music. The sum of all these great parts makes for a thrilling listen.

The concept is implicit in the music's gospel-soul communion, the lyrics' yearning and reckoning, and the rousing, towering power of Jones' purposively nostalgic soul vocal. [Jun 2023, p.31]

Seemingly posed as a promise and threat, Wait Til I Get Over is a striking and poignant deviation..

This meeting of varying experiments is at the core of Wait Til I Get Over, Jones is able to challenge himself while still keeping the narrative of the LP intact, an expedition that could’ve given us countless results. What we got was an album that sits in the middle ground of the past and future, toying with the present in order to give the listener a full experience rather than a simple collection of songs.

It is also easy to see it on the solo debut project of Aaron Frazer: "Introducing..." (2021). Durand Jones & The Indications are a better explored bound breaking project and very fun, to what these guys are proposing themselves, yet, there is still a much bigger soul and sensibility in these projects that in any other just because this is an important opportunity for them to be their more nature and truest self, with no expectation. That is why we should be taking the change to listen to them too, because this is an awesome way to get to know the roots of much bigger ambitions. Expand
