    Trippy, fitful and attitudinal; there are almost no classic soul arrangements, nor even the hard swing of 1990s hip-hop soul. “Wasteland” demonstrates the limitations of that approach as often as its strengths. ... Faiyaz sings with conviction, but he’s rarely grounded. Instead, he lives somewhere out in space — a man regarding his experiences from afar. Its production, which zigzags, wheezes and soothes, rarely feeling steady, sometimes tells the story more effectively than he does.

    Thankfully, the execution often surpasses the ideas—these are intricate tracks, twinkling through layers of texture. But they get clogged in swerves and side-steps.

    I found it very difficult to get into this album, just because all the songs sound very similar to one another in my opinion; not to mentionI found it very difficult to get into this album, just because all the songs sound very similar to one another in my opinion; not to mention the length of the album. Why are some of these skits longer than a minute? It eats up at the running time and bogs down the album. I appreciate the hazy and ambient production, but again, I found it hard to stay interested in the album.… Full Review »
