Whitney Rose's We Still Go to Rodeos stands out as among the best of these contemporary albums. Rose wrote the dozen stellar tracks (there's not a bad one in the bunch) that range from traditional country ballads to rocking rave-ups.

Everything about this set feels more confident, self-assured and assertive than even her impressive earlier releases. The combination of Rose’s alternately sweet and tangy vocals with her best collection of tunes yet makes this her finest overall album.

Rose may tend to nod at the past but she's not a revivalist, she blends these familiar sounds in slyly idiosyncratic, personal ways that give We Still Go to Rodeos a handsome, modern feel that's distinct from other retro-minded Americana records, her previous albums included.

It's a raucous collection of deeply-felt country — a journey through many lives. And while its electric, dust-blown sound doesn't push into any new directions, it's a fittingly rich setting for Rose's outsized personality and reedy, expressive voice.

Rose is pushing the envelope a bit on this outing. Sometimes it seems as if she’s trying to break through a sound that was bigger than she bargained for but there are still those precious moments where her voice and phrasing may have you reminiscing of classic singers like Bobbie Gentry and Dusty Springfield. That’s mixed with a swagger, self-confidence, and a willingness to rock out.

Blending country with a honky tonk charm. I have been a fan since finding her singing a duet with Raul Malo. She was in Chicago last year playing at a little place in the northern suburbs. If course I was there. I was able to take photos of her with my "pro"camera. Paul Koloderie produced the album and it shows in Whitney's music. Keeping with her style." Believe me , Angela" about wife telling the new woman in her husbands life. "In a Rut" is a rave up country honky tonk rocker." You'd blame Me For The Rain" has a bluesy feel to it. "Don't Give Up On Me" A true country tune right out of the 60's. "We Still Go To Rodeos" Has a wonderful harmonica tickled through out. If country radio played country instead of regurgitated pop Whitney would be a household name. This is an album to be heard by all. Expand
