What One Becomes shows Cook and Turner again occupying highly coveted space on the zenith of aggressive music--this time alongside Yacyshyn, the percussive mastermind. It’s hard to imagine a better metal record coming out this year.

Alternating between unsettling dissonance and bludgeoning force, the North American act’s sophomore effort showcases a crossbreed of stoner metal, sludge and noise that both enthralls and frightens the listener.

The result is some of his most exciting work since Isis disbanded.

Sumac's rock thunder becomes more involved as they sink deeper into their own personal spaces, uncorking emotions and letting loose inner demons, while still fully functioning as part of a group experience. [Aug 2016, p.58]

Sumac are an original voice in metal, and we certainly need more of that. However, as they currently stand, they're merely good. Really, the only thing stopping them from greatness is a lack of self-editing.

It's challenging and confrontational, but it's still engaging and relatable. Bracing and personal, What One Becomes is some of Turner's most intense work yet.

The musicians' playing retains the band's typically muscular vigour, but has taken on extra nuance.

The sound a minibus of demons might make stuck in a bank holiday A303 tailback. [Aug 2016, p.99]

There’s real heart buried underneath SUMAC’s furious, deafening bleakness; it can just feel like a serious excavation job to locate it.

There is definitely material to like on What One Becomes, but, aside from “Clutch of Oblivion”, it’s scattered throughout longer pieces that are harder to enjoy as full songs.

One of the best post metal records of all time. Some of the best work Aaron Turner has ever made.
