  1. The results are loud, punishing, totally lacking in subtlety, and at this juncture, almost completely predictable.

An album that's just as vital as it is accomplished.

It's not as abrasive or confrontational as previous efforts, but Worship nevertheless shimmers with a defiantly bleak edge. [Jul 2012, p.90]

Worship [is] an occasionally solid, but ultimately forgettable affair.

A Place to Bury Strangers hadn't yet reached the point where it needed reinvention, but giving its sound a few well-considered tweaks pushes its creative momentum forward even faster.

A Place To Bury Strangers succeeds in one aspect: It produces music so hammering and explosively airy that it crumbles the very walls used to create such an echoed and amplified sound. It just fails to recognize that in doing so for almost 45-minutes straight, we begin to feel like we're getting buried alive under the rubble.

A Place to Bury Strangers have offered up another winning album that, while hardly the most pop-friendly record you'll hear this year, proves itself worthy of revisiting.

    An exhaustingly incoherent listen.

Despite the aggression in their music, it's not uncommon for APTBS to tone things down a few tracks into an album, but watch out for the lull in this one.

APTBS's newest, the relentlessly brilliant Worship, seems designed to drive the listening public violently to their knees.

It's not what you came in for, but quite pleasant all the same. [10 Jun 2012, p.53]

Worship makes solid use of driving pop and new-wave inspirations straight out of the sort of black-lit club that doesn't open until 2 a.m. and practically serves absinthe on tap. [No.89, p.58]

Long term fans might find Worship not as visceral as previous outings, whilst those intrigued by occasional flashes of melody might find themselves beaten into submission by the album's oppressive nature.

APTBS mask a lack of ideas or something to say by inventing louder volumes than everyone else.

A Place to Bury Strangers are adept at capturing a certain kind of aggressive energy, but too often they bottle it in middling pop songs.

They've made one of the most counterintuitively accessible albums of the year.

While A Place to Bury Strangers take the brave step of allowing the distortion to dissipate, the unfettered view isn't always flattering: Ackermann's lyrics can sound like they were torn out of a bored, trench-coated high-school kid's notebook, with the cyber-punk fantasia of "Mind Control" and I-want-to-die miserablism.

Worship doesn't break new ground, and it's arguably not even the greatest record done in this vein (or even the greatest record by APTBS, for that matter). But there's a diligent craftsmanship here and just enough attitude to carry the album all the way to the finish line.

What is surprising is just how chief songwriter Oliver Ackermann shapes their face-melting shoegaze into something altogether more sophisticated. [Aug 2012, p.94]

A disturbing but utterly all-consuming listen.

There's not enough conviction or charisma on the surface of Worship's dulled sandpaper to break the skin, let alone get under it.

Constantly exhilarating, it's a sensory obliteration that proves that now, more than ever, APTBS are much more than just noise.

Make no mistake, this record sounds amazing... But in choosing to stick to classic song structures rather than utilise their incredible sound technology to explore the experimental avant-garde, or to make killer dance tracks, A Place To Bury Strangers run the risk of all their songs sounding pretty much the same.

The highlights of their third album appear to have been forged rather than recorded. [Aug 2012, p.69]

While Worship occasionally soars on its own beautiful anonymity, it misses the bar set by a line of charismatic frontmen who exposed themselves through compelling narratives.
