There's a distinctly Mitteleuropa aura to her enigmatic Nico-like vocals. [Nov 2016, p.96]
  2. The Wire

You Know What's It's Like presents the emotional cente of dal Forno's work with a clarity previously absent from either band. [Nov 2016, p.55]
  3. Dec 5, 2016
    80
The album manages to sound detached yet intimate as dal Forno's fragile voice and glowing melodies reach toward something intangible.

Carla dal Forno is willing to provoke listeners on a number of levels without spoon-feeding them. With You Know What It’s Like, she manages to do so on her own terms, in a way that feels both distant and inviting and rewards the listener’s willingness to sit with the ambiguity in between.
  5. Uncut
    Nov 4, 2016

Dour, yes, but possessed of a regal sort of beauty. [Nov 2016, p.26]
  6. Nov 4, 2016
    70
You Know What It’s Like is a grower, and one that demands repeated listening.
  7. Nov 4, 2016

"DB Rip" feels like a missed opportunity to bring techno into play, while the title track overdoes its gothic pomp. The rest are slight but elegant mood pieces. Dal Forno is good at these, but it's her pop songs that do more than just tick the BEB boxes.
