She's clearly making her own way, unafraid to knock suitors down a couple pegs ("How That Taste"), allowing her vulnerability to shine through ("You Should Be Here"), and affirming her individuality.

Where this album excels is in the celebration of youth’s insecurities and dichotomies.

It's an intense, focused exploration of all, or nearly all, the relationships the singer is involved in, both romantic and familial.

Trey Songz and The-Dream can gripe on tracks about smart phones and Omarion can make a run for dancehall licks, but Kehlani’s pulling all these ideas together into something that feels original and authentic and, somehow just slightly transgressive.

It’s this unabashed ambition that makes You Should Be Here resonate long after one has internalized its motivational urges ("Can't nobody love somebody that do not love themselves") and tender observations on the mechanics of relationships (see the wistful "Unconditional").

Kehlani’s second self-released album, there’s a calm swagger that underpins even the most anguished of these songs. She easily channels the attitude and swing of mid-1990s R&B girl groups.

Kehlani takes immense risks when she lets emotion take over her music, but they certainly pay off, making this mixtape one to remember.Kehlani takes immense risks when she lets emotion take over her music, but they certainly pay off, making this mixtape one to remember. This girl can really sing, and she has a very uplifting and positive message in her music. From top to bottom very strong production, and varies her subject matter to things beyond heartbreak and relationships, which is unique for a Gen-Y R&B artist. You can really feel her pain and her emotion through the both the content and her vocal delivery. She's only 20 years old too, so best believe we're going to be seeing a whole lot of her for the foreseeable future. Full Review »
