Zunkuft may be even more sleep-inducing than the average ambient album, but it's worth admiring for its robust, and not humorless, conceptual solidity.

Voigt has creative skill, and he’s using it on Zukunft Ohne Menschen. It’s just that, in order to fully listen to it, you probably have to see it.

The music lacks the sheer immensity that must have graced it originally, as it's virtually impossible to recreate something so grand at home.

Completists will appreciate the ability to experience the Art Cologne installation in the convenience of their own home, but everyone else should have no trouble finding more compelling examples of this theme, from the most difficult noise music to the most pleasant synth-pop.

Unlike so much of Voigt's past work, it's not an idea worth exploring at this length. Zukunft's only impressive feat is making Voigt's elegant, pristine work under guises like Studio 1 and Gas seem like the work of a raving, impassioned romantic.
