"Crystal Dynamics have effortlessly done the impossible with Rise of the Tomb Raider, crafting a sequel that is superior to their reboot in every single way possible. It’s a bigger, more expansive experience that has a captivating narrative, engrossing gameplay loops and an absolutely stunning presentation. Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the best action games ever crafted, and a generational leap forward as the series looks towards the horizon. Lara Croft is in good hands." ...Read full review

"While 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot was great, fans of the series were pining for more tombs to explore and relics to collect. Crystal Dynamics addressed that and then some in Rise of the Tomb Raider, improving on its upgrade system, telling a fun story, more puzzles, and adding bears, tigers, cheetahs, and more packs of wolves to kill and skin. Just like we remember. " ...Read full review

"The last Lara Croft adventure comes with basic adjustments to its gameplay that make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. We loved the tombs, we loved the puzzles, we loved the exploration, we loved the world, we loved the combat.

Having immensely enjoyed the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, I was anticipating liking it's sequel, and I did - but it was one of the few gamesHaving immensely enjoyed the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider, I was anticipating liking it's sequel, and I did - but it was one of the few games that actually managed to surpass my expectations and then some.

Rise of the Tomb Raider takes place mostly in Siberia across 3 absolutely massive and densely packed hubs. The story is decent by videogame standards, having enough twists and turns to keep it engaging and a villain that's a marked improvement from the previous game. Though I could have done without many of the side characters that aid Lara throughout the campaign they don't detract from the experience on the whole. But it's Lara Croft that really makes the game, the character work here is brilliant, Lara can simultaneously be vulnerable and hard faced making her a dangerous and interesting bad ass. It's not often you see women take on this type of role in games and I hope Crystal Dynamics keep her this way.

Combat, stealth and platforming all return with improvements. Combat remains tight, the dynamic cover still flawless in the face of battle and on the highest difficulty enemies can be a real challenge - the game is almost a little too reliant on combat but luckily it's fun enough. Though fighting human enemies can lose it's lustre after a while, fighting animals is an absolute thrill (and hard!). Platforming is similar to the last game but now with some extra moves to make it a bit more varied and stealth has been implemented very well here, in fact it's one of the most fun stealth systems I've used outside of Metal Gear Solid 5.

The best thing about Rise of the Tomb Raider is the optional side tombs, they're absolutely brilliant. Not so challenging that you're pulling your xbox one controller out of the wall after hurling it out of annoyance, but they can be legitimately tricky in places. Not only that but they have a fantastic atmosphere that recalls the old games, my favourite (despite being easier than the others I've attempted) involves raising water levels and it was a joy to play through, I felt like it was 1996 all over again. I do almost wish there were more of them, but they are still plentiful and much bigger than the previous games, I would happily put down more cash to play some tomb DLC's.

The game feels full of content and I'm no where near completing it 100%, but it doesn't feel bloated. The set pieces that push the story along are thrilling and much better implemented than the last games. It's hard to give Rise of the Tomb Raider any negative points, I'd say it's almost the perfect action adventure game! But I'm hoping in the sequel they cut down a little on human slaughtering and really push the tomb and animal combat, which is where the this game get its identity and it really excels. Rise of the Tomb Raider 10/10

The sequel delivered all the good things from the reboot and then made it better. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a top notch game and a 2018 third installment hopefully will add more to Lara's adventures. Expand

Found the puzzles too short in easy in the last game and it had very little tomb exploration. It was more about combat. This one has a decent mix of combat, exploration, puzzle solving, and collecting. It doesn't drag on too long in one direction. After beating the game I was happy to explore additional challenge tombs. The only complaint I can think of is that is the over world sections are not set in particularly exciting locations. Would have liked an island setting better. Maybe the next game will let you travel the world more often. Imagine if you relived areas like the great wall of China. Also, where's the duel wielding desert eagles? Expand

The story is so similar to that movie it's hard to imagine them using anything else as a base for the story. That is not a bad thing but it got to a point later on in the game where it just became rediculous how similar they were. As for the game itself, the gameplay is solid but the framerate and some game crippling bugs showed up quite a bit more than I was expecting with this game. I had multiple freezes and crashes throughout my playthrough and that's not something I can recommend to anyone right now. But honestly the worst thing this game did was releasing on the same day that Fallout 4 did. That alone will cost them sales and that was definitely a dumb move for a company that's trying to get on the same level as Bethesda. Still I liked this game. It's nothing I'll remember for years to come but, like the first Tomb Raider game that Crystal Dynamics did, it's very solid and definitely well worth your time. Expand

Why can't I just buy the core game for $20?

What if after the core game, I am good, and don't need/want any additional content. What is the worth of the DLCs and others that I will not play? As a PS4 consumer, I don't have the option to just have the core game and decide later if I would like additional content. Why make it a bundle, just to justify the $60 price tag.
