Just as poetic, mysterious, and bewitching as Blonde Redhead's more baroque albums, Barragán is a quietly audacious set of songs that ranks among the band's finest music.

It can meander--Mind To Be Had never quite knows what to do with its initially exciting Neu! vibrations, Defeatist Anthem doesn't shift beyond pretty--but they texture Barragan with a delicacy and precision that makes you want to keep picking away at these songs. [Oct 2014, p.114]

Barragán is not an album determined to grab you in one listen; it's a "grower," as they say, but once it grows, it's apparent there's no shortage of baroque delights to discover on this veteran band's ninth album.

Barragán‘s casual atmosphere sees Blonde Redhead at their most laid back.

This record is the sound of what's left after a breakup: the push and pull of fragile and forceful, with all the veneers stripped completely away.

The tense chemistry has been, to some degree, recaptured. [Oct 2014, p.68]

Even with Barragán’s sleepiness and sparseness, the malleability of a band like Blonde Redhead--especially one that continues to make music for the art of creation--is the same strength that has kept them relevant for so long.

While their weird is very often wonderful, these 10 tracks are somewhat inconsistent. [Oct 2014, p.98]

As a record, Barragan concludes as a frustrating summation of Blonde Redhead’s overwhelming promise and a glaring reminder of the band’s flaws.

There’s plenty of occasion for beauty here throughout, but the band seems intent on disrupting the pleasant view.

It has some great moments but is probably one to listen to when you want to drift off into a peaceful slumber.

Barragán, the follow-up to that 2010 misstep [Penny Sparkle], course-corrects well, incorporating the most interesting elements of that electronic side trek while returning a few steps closer to their strengths.

For all its low points, Barragán still floats on the strength of Makino’s alluring voice and the band’s deft ear for lovely atmospherics.

Atmospherically, Barragán falls to a part of the spectrum Blonde Redhead have never found themselves on before, but half of the songs here feel like placeholders for ideas that haven’t been fully excavated.

At it's best, Barragan sounds like typically inventive musicians sleepily phoning it in. [No. 113, p.54]

Four years later, though, all Blonde Redhead has to show for its lengthy studio hiatus is another too-obvious bauble.

Barragán is not overtly accessible--it does take a few listens to warm up to it--but it’s so all over the map and light that it just feels like a palate cleansing exercise.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. A very psychotic sound! I would not recommend this albun to anyone. People could pop pills with it, commit suicide or join troops of psyco-designers or "so called" artish people to end the planet in bad taste with a depressive mood of self compassion and pity for the crazy, those are also very trippy songs. I think there are better arrays of music in other groups and simply more original with real quality of creativity soothing for mind and soul, that doesn't hurt one's ears. Full Review »
