  • Summary: This debut album for the Washington D.C. punk five-piece (with a rhythm section stocked with two drummers and two bassists) has drawn comparisons to Liars, Fugazi, and Q and Not U.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 4 out of 5
  2. Negative: 0 out of 5
  1. If your tastes favor frenzied, rabid or berserk rock, grab yourself a copy of Black Eyes and tie it up tight.
  2. Sometimes evocative of Joy Division on PCP, sometimes of Arab on Radar on codeine, Ian MacKaye's production maintains the right balance of tin-can sounds with bullfrog disco stylings.
  3. With these production qualities, the band is just comfortably abrasive, snagging against the mix of bent-string guitars and strange, trebly percussive clamor.
  4. 70
Black Eyes gives barely a hint as to what this band achieves onstage. [#59, p.84]
  5. This album will have to remain the a mark of a band's crazy potential and perhaps a warning siren of what is to come.
