  1. Ultimately, Blossoms leap from their chart-bound Trojan horse as modernist rock heroes.

    They impress with a neo-Romanticism rather than basic rabble-rousing. [Sep 2016, p.99]

Blossoms have produced an album of perfectly structured songs accompanied by strong lyrics that tell many tales to the large cult they seem to have already acquired.

There’s plenty to applaud on a promising debut, but, as yet, not enough to believe in.

There’s a decent amount of groove and swagger here too, not least in the low-slung funk of Smashed Pianos, and singer Tom Ogden’s vocals, are pitched engagingly between the rough-edged croon of Alex Turner and the florid yelp of Brett Anderson.

Blossom's debut record isn't short on marketable material, but its impact could certainly have been enhanced by a more ruthless pruning.

So this means you aren't going to findBlossoms made the common conscience decision to abandon anything that would keep them from Radio 1. So this means you aren't going to find anything in this record that any sane person would deem as important. It's a middle of the road pop record with regurgitated melodies and maudlin choruses about "not being alone, tonight" blah blah . The frustration felt by some is because if you are going to polish yourself up as a NME boy band you can't pretend you are 'indie' or that you put out something special. The sooner Blossoms realise they can't have both the sooner they will start sleeping more soundly. Expect these guys to sell a bunch of records in the next few years and then be confronted with the reality that no one takes them seriously. Expand
