The easy melodic hooks that drew fans to the Lumineers in the first place remain, but the combination of stronger material and looser performances make for a strong fourth outing.

The tension and ambiguity implicit in downbeat songs with upbeat choruses lies at the heart of an album that may not easily yield its secrets but will keep you singing as you try to work them out.

Won't surprise anyone, but its upbeat feel and finely wrought prettiness will satisfy Luministas for sure. [Jan 2022, p.71]

BRIGHTSIDE is no different: belt out vibrant and occasionally resonant anthems that are easy to grasp even if somewhat oversimplified. The nuance is altogether lost, though, like most of their discography, it'll win you over with its scrappy, can-do charm.

The film-making of this album is amazing. It gets me emotional and it makes me feel some experience that I've never had before.

I thoroughly enjoyed a decent portion of this project and found most of the songs good. Despite the somewhat bland lyricism and semi-boring sound and production throughout the album, I did like the adventurous and unique approach in regards to their previous albums. I wish this was more lively and fun, considering the livelier parts are rare and they aren't as good as they can be. It can certainly improve and they have the talent to do better, but I will take this record for what it is. A new style and a fun album to listen to for a relaxing evening from The Lumineers. Expand

Wesley Shultz tries way too hard with his vocals and they’re trying a new style that doesn’t fit their skills and sound. The Lumineers have been my favorite band for almost a decade and this is a huge let down. I hope they can return to their previous sound and make songs similar to stubborn love, slow it down, big parade, and sleep on the floor. Expand
