Dec 18, 2012Cobra Juicy is an album that needs time to reveal itself. Like the band itself, it is a mysterious work that is difficult to get to the heart of, but with a little effort it is a rewarding experience.
-
Dec 17, 2012It's a unique record in the wider sense, but maybe less so within the band's own back catalogue--if you've yet to be snake-charmed by the occasionally venomous but oh-so-shiny Black Moth Super Rainbow, this is certainly a good place to start.
-
Nov 8, 2012Much of Cobra Juicy finds itself operating more on the sensitive side of their distinct weirdness, with the album sporting some of the bands gentlest, breeziest, and most romantic sounding tracks yet.
-
Nov 8, 2012While Cobra Juicy does offer fans a few new elements to what has become the group's trademark sound, BMSR's aesthetic is largely unchanged--they're still the psychedelic synth-rockers you know and love, and while Cobra Juicy does occasionally flirt with the extraordinary, it ultimately settles for just being "quite good.
-
Oct 30, 2012We're treated to a blissful numbness, which is perfect for those who came here for the whacked out waveforms.
-
Oct 26, 2012This might be BMSR's most accessible effort, but if you couldn't get past the vocoder and voodoo before, it's unlikely that you will now.
-
UncutOct 26, 2012In practice, it's suggestive of the luvved-up terrace thug moment of the late '80s, but with the ultraviolence retained. [Dec 2012, p.67]
-
Oct 24, 2012It's the Black Moth Super Rainbow recording we've been waiting for: unchecked and as wonky as ever, but with just enough structure to give it a lasting impact.
-
Oct 23, 2012Black Moth Super Rainbow's fifth release may not be their most resourceful work to date, but it's undoubtedly their most sublime.
-
Oct 23, 2012Cobra Juicy leaves you sonically stoned, in a good way--good luck even getting off the couch.
-
Oct 22, 2012Cobra Juicy employs a richly flourished amount of instruments and sounds that are catchy and full of life.
-
Oct 22, 2012Without giving up its commitment to obfuscation or its sense of mystery, the band has crafted a fun, playful and eclectic collection of songs that reveal a more focused, melody-driven approach to writing and a surprising level of thematic coherence.
-
Oct 22, 2012While Eating Us and their various solo pursuits found them sticking their necks out into the world at large, Cobra Juicy proves that their self-imposed isolation once again yields the best results.
-
MagnetOct 17, 2012There is still pullback, and delicate, melodic music seeps in, sounding like (synthetic) waves crashing on a (glass) beach. [No. 92, p.52]
-
Oct 15, 2012In sacrificing weirdness for conformity, Cobra Juicy shows growth, but somewhat mugs the band of what made them so singular.
-
Oct 15, 2012Fans of the deep-friend earth tones that made up the group's earlier works may not be completely sold on the hi-definition beats and growly synth tones of Cobra Juicy, but newcomers to the band will still have a lot to digest and enjoy in trying to sort out the catchiness from the craziness.
-
Oct 15, 2012Cobra Juicy is the most technically focused that Black Moth Super Rainbow have ever been, but it also lacks an important degree of their trademark self-contradiction.
-
Oct 15, 2012Cobra Juicy drips with the group's trademark heady synthesizers, as well as infectious hooks and punchy electronica to craft their most melodic and accessible record to date.
