Hook-packed mini-album, direct first-person narratives are sung with knowing sweetness over sunny guitar classicism. [Sep 2017, p.96]

At 20 years old, Allison is only just getting started, and Collection is a tidy introduction to Soccer Mommy that points towards her vision of bringing her contemplative songwriting to a more potent and energizing level.

Soccer Mommy mirrors the melancholic joy of Death Cab For Cutie with the emotive songwriting of Now, Now, reworking some older demos into mournful indie-pop that are introspective, yet intensely relatable.

It largely manages to avoid vapid repetition and provides plenty of charm and promise for the future. [Sep 2017, p.37]

The heartache-on-sleeve lyricism occasionally veers into the melodramatic (“Passed you on a side street / Brushed across your wrist like a razor blade”), but it’s forgiven because of the sheer honesty offered.

The new tracks feel of a piece with the previous works, their confident production the result of years of honing a sound that began, like the best progressions, somewhat sinusoidally.

An occasional stab of synthesizer is the closest these songs come to pomp, and the production is still scruffy around the edges, hi-fi only by the standards of her early self-recordings. But the improved fidelity lets her words and voice come across clearer than they did from the bedroom, revealing how much more elegant Allison’s wordplay is than it can seem at first blush, and her gift for detailing conflict with the economy of a young adult novel.

Yes there are some decent songs but it all kind of passes you by without leaving a huge impression. "Death by Chocolate" is a microcosm of the album. Catchy and nice but easily digestible and forgettable. "Waiting for Cars" is the high point but it comes so late in the album there is a danger you won't hang around long enough. I like "Soccer Mommy" as an artist so I find "Collection" enjoyable enough but for newcomers to the band I would strongly guide them towards "Clean" as an introduction. Expand
