One of the best debut albums ever made.

Before this album, Kanye West didn't become the ruler he is today. He was the acclaimed producer of Blueprint who served up hit tracks one after another. But his real dream was to become a rapper and that was a difficult task. In an industry dominated by gangsta rap and hardcore rap, it was hard for a backpacker like Kanye West to shine. But those troubles are furthermore reason why College Dropout is one of the best debut albums ever. Why? Because he overcame them with one HUGE leap.

Kanye isn't the gangsta/hustler type. He is the average guy who has something to say. He discusses various topics like college education, his drop out, materialism, consumerism, religion and its role in music among others. Not expected of a normal rap album because it sounds too normal. But that is the beauty of the album. West fearlessly dares to rap about things that don't include money, crack, girls, or clothes. And he does it with his own style that is powerful and engaging. He can be funny and serious at the same time. Lyrically, he isn't half-bad. He is able to interest his audience throughout the course of the album.

And the production? Oh man. The beats are surprisingly so catchy yet inventive. Jesus Walks features a pounding club peat and chants that accompany his messages of Jesus and lack of God on radio simply because there is no profitability. And The New Workout Plan features a booty shaker that is laced with Middle Eastern violins.

West's wordplay is still to be developed and some songs feel like filler tracks. Nonetheless, College Dropout is an outstanding achievement by one so normal to most of us yet so unique to his fellow rap peers.

The 21 tracks feature various interludes and skits that give College Dropout the feel of a concept album. On top of that the themes the lyrics carry stood out during a time when hip hop was all about gang life. To hear songs about family and self-image in rap was basically unheard of. Even today that's impressive and different in a lot of ways. The album even makes a fairly strong case for why college is a waste of time.

There is one downside to the album though and that's how long it is. It just feels overly so at a certain point. That skits lose their charm and just start to feel unnecessary. The exhausting 12 minute + closing track where Kanye tells about his rise to relevancy is the perfect example of this.

When all is said and done though College Dropout still shines. With sarcastic wit and often very meaningful messages, Kanye's debut is a must for rap/hip hop fans. Especially for those who have a taste for his later work and are curious to see what got him this far.

Best transition from someone was a Producer who turned to a Rapper. Kanye made his mark with style and that whole world knew he was from the groundbreaking Through the Wire to Jesus Walks and Family Business. Kanye managed to put in his religious views into the his Album with positive feedback from Fans and Critics alike. He may not be the best lyricist but he is certainly a deep one.

West's debut head-bopper is just that: a head-bopper. "Dropout" tries to accomplish a tough juggling act - paying equal attention to subverting braggadocious hip-hop cliches and embracing them (if a bit sarcastically) to make a more lively, enjoyable album. Unfortunately, this juggling comes across as hypocrisy rather than compromise for the sake of art. Because of this, even inWest's debut head-bopper is just that: a head-bopper. The production is superb. I do have a gripe about couple of the tracks though. I don't mind the occasional use of the F word, at times it will heighten or emphasise an emotion or sentiment but I don't understand the need for excessive F-bombs and motherfing all over the shop one a few of the tracks here. It's pointless, ruins an otherwise very clever record and just conforms to stereotype. This guy is articulate enough to get his point across without resorting to gutter language. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can I say? Lyricism-wise, this album isn't the best. Of course, Kanye has his moments of good rhymes, and enjoyable punch lines, but it's nothing special.
Production-wise, this album is almost perfect. Unbelievable production, with arguably the best use of sampling in hip hop history, this album's beats are perfection. They're groundbreaking, and thoroughly enjoyable.
But another deal is: what's he rapping about? The topics on this album range from his accident that caused him to want to rap even more, and even Jesus! Very nice to hear Kanye rap about such things, because, when was the last time you heard a mainstream rapper rap about Jesus? His dedication to rap is truly shown on Through the Wire, which he raps with a piece of metal stuck in his chin due to his car crash, and with a fitting 'Through the Fire' sample.
This album is, as aforementioned, groundbreaking and completely original. Nothing like it has been done before, which makes this a legendary album, and a hip hop classic.

But the production is where this album really shines. Built almost entirely on sped up samples of Soul, Gospel and R&B classics, these instrumentals take the mood of their original sources and give them a fresh modern mood with hard hitting drums. In terms of subject matter, this album will definitely get you thinking, Kanye intelligently examines his past on personal tracks such as "Never Let Me Down," "Spaceship," and "Through the Wire," but throughout the album makes us contemplate issues such as religion, gang violence, the minimum wage, racism and even (on a hilarious satirical track) work out plans. At the same time, he gives us room to have fun on playful jams like "School Spirit" and "Slow Jamz" which shows the talents of Chicago peer Twista. Kanye’s production on this album was something new and amazing. It stands out, like the other early-2000’s hip hop albums failed to do. His lyrics were also unique. This is the greatest thing Kanye West ever did. The production on this is just amazing. Every track sounds so different yet similar. Kanye's lyrics are funny, yet serious. He is ambitious, yet humble. I just truly love this album. He put a religious track on his debut album, an album people already was sceptic about. Not only did he put it on the album, he made it one of its singles. KanyeThis is the greatest thing Kanye West ever did. The production on this is just amazing. Kanye really paved a new wave for hip hop with this album, which I forever will be grateful for, as if not, crunk music would probably still have a big influence on new hip hop. I don't like crunk at all. Favorite tracks: We don't care, Jesus Walks, Never Let Me Down. Expand

On this album, Kanye shows off his talent as a producer with his trademark 'chipmunk soul' production style (with songs based upon sped up soul samples), while its lyrics on racial injustice, the education system (and those who mindlessly go to college) and the remarkably amusing skits were a breath of fresh air from the gangsta rap status quo of the day. Kanye sounds likable and down to earth on this album, two things he wouldn't pull off again for many years after. There isn't a sample on this album that isn't tasteful and creative, nor a hook that isn't catchy, nor a bar that isn't fire. Absolutely essential; a modern classic if ever there was one. Expand

If the length feels too much for the standards of today (2021) we still can salute Kanye for inviting many meaningful artists to his party, as Jay-Z, Common and Mos Def. They all bring a bit more depth and versatility in the process of the album. Skits are funny but unfortunately let few room for replayability and soon become skippable and untasty. Some songs also appear to be dull fillers but however contribute to these unmissable 2000's feels. The last track 'Last Call' has a very specific energy I love: a long story-telling, great beat, amazing instrumentals (and especially the trumpet from the middle of it). Interesting production all along. Expand

All Falls Down- god this song is so uplifting sounding even though the lyrics really aren't. Syleena Johnson does so well on this track as well.

Spaceship- I feel this song is simply underrated. It is one of my favorite songs from the album. I just want to listen to this driving through the city.

    Jesus Walks- Classic. Listen to it. So good.;

Never let me down- Need to listen to again as I just started to like it.

Get em high- Talib and common did really good on this as well. Beat is sick.

The New Workout Plan- one of Ye's funniest songs. ending beat is used in J cole's Work Out.

Slow Jamz- this song is SO DAMN GOOD. Just started liking it after not the first time and literally can't stop. never skipped on my playlist.

    Breathe in breathe out- meh.

School spirit- Love it. So positive sounding and soul samples and everything about it. It is edited though which is odd.

    Two Words- gotta relisten

Through the WIRE- SO GOOD YOU WILL ENJOY

Family Business- sad and happy. so good.

Last Call - gotta listen again.

Just to show how much of a breath of fresh air this 21 track album was, when Kanye showed multiple masterpieces on this, Jesus Walks being a prime example, to his colleagues, they straight up laughed at him. The multiple grammy's and love from both critics and fans, quickly proved them wrong. You can feel mr. West's constant persistence on here to make a piece of art, and it shows off. Most songs have managed to remain just as fresh and catchy 16 years after it's release. The cheerful and mind-blowing incorporation of soul samples isn't the last contributor to that. 10/10 Expand

Kanye was one of the first conscious rapper to blow up. He portrays a new concept for that time that isn't immediatly accepted by the music labels. He discusses this issue in various song during the album. K. talks about his issue for dropping out of school, being a black man in America and he even talk about his faith in Jesus. Very consistent lyrically, a little bit less musically speaking. Afterall this album is the introduction to a large audiance of a legend and as a start it is very great.
