You can’t separate this band from nostalgia, and although that might seem like a crutch to some, it can be a major point of interest for others, especially when it’s done as well as it is on Deluxe.

Credit Broyles' mastery with six strings and a reverb pedal or Frobos' snarky, keening vocals. Give Mitchell a hand for pushing the songs forward with just the right balance of muscle and restraint. Most of all, just be glad these guys all quit their musical day jobs and formed Omni, because they made one heck of a good post-punk-pop album together.

This is not herky-jerky art-rock of the monochromatic, nervous-itch kind, but something more coloured-in, packed with fantastic choruses and blissful wigouts.

Even if its ambitions aren’t that grand, then at least Deluxe is a far better way to spend 30 minutes than many other 2016 releases shackled with the blanket terms “indie” and “post-punk”.

Curiously, Omni could welcome some balance into their arrangements; they’ve already figured out a way to structure their lopsided ideas, which is a crucial element that most aspiring experimental bands with a pop slant struggle with in the first place. And that’s something that cannot be taught.
