    Whether Lauper will replicate the commercial success of “Tuskegee” is doubtful, but this is Cyndi Lauper we’re talking about, so only a fool would bet against it.

    On a track-by-track level, Detour has a few stumbles--the biggest is "Night Life," and that's due to the gravelly growl of Willie Nelson, not Lauper--and if it's taken as a collection of performances and not a coherent record, it's fun.

    Not every guest spot works--Lauper's idiosyncrasies don't quite mesh with Alison Krauss's pristine bluegrass harmonies on Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas." But Lauper and Willie Nelson are simpatico originals on "Night Life," and "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly," with Vince Gill playing Conway to her Loretta, is Cyndi's kind of shtick.

    None of the songs on Detour are without at least some merit, though a few are without any discernible marketplace value, save niche kiosks along I-40 or the occasional road tripper’s Spotify.

Depois do álbum de forte influência eletrônica Bring Ya to the Brink de 2008, a sua incursão no blues/jazz em Memphis Blues de 2010 e escrever as músicas do musical Kinky Boots, pelo qual venceu o Tony, agora chegou a vez de Cyndi se aventurar pelo country em Detour, o seu décimo primeiro álbum.

    Detour é uma coleção correta e nostálgica de velhos clássicos do country americano que foram sucesso nas vozes dos principais "fundadores" do gênero. Apesar da produção decente da própria cantora ao lado do veterano Tony Brown, o álbum não apresenta nada de excitante e não acrescenta nada de novo nas releituras das doze faixas, ao contrário do que fez no álbum At Last de 2003 em que reformulou várias canções importantes do cancioneiro americano. Felizmente, a reverência e o respeito pela integridade das canções, além da adição de rock e blues, ajuda o álbum a ter um resultado final positivo. As escolhas das canções foram segura e um pouco batida, mas Cyndi defende cada faixa de maneira exemplar, dando a sua interpretação ímpar para cada uma. Os convidados que participam do álbum mostram o carinho da cantora pelo gênero e, também, o respeito que a mesma obteve ao longo desses anos: desde nomes mais contemporâneos como Jewel e Alison Krauss até lendas do country Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris e o grande Willie Nelson. Os melhores momentos de Detour ficam por conta de Misty Blue, Heartaches By The Number, The End Of The World, You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly e I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart. Um trabalho menor na carreira em uma carreira tão elogiavel da Cyndi Lauper.    … Expand
