Vintage-sounding yet definitely on its own trip, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker brings a sense of spiritual uplift to its mind-expanding sonic explorations, feeding your ears and soul simultaneously.

Dying Surfer Meets His Maker showcases All Them Witches in complete control of their songwriting, arranging, producing, and performing. Slow-burning albums that provide this much weight, creativity, surprise, and enduring pleasure are rare.

They just make music that pleases them and in doing that also created one of the most adventurous, least predictable albums of the year.

At the end of the day, though, Dying Surfer has to be taken on its own merits for what it is: a damn fine rock album.

Like I'm driving through the desert in my Ford Mustang with the smell of burning gasoline in the air and by the end of the album sitting by a campfire having lonely thoughts. All Them Witches' strongest suit is their beautiful instrumentals e.g.: This is where it falls apart and The Mellowing stand out. The blend of desert rock and psychedelic rock are a perfect mixture and the album manages to have a cohesive sound throughout, despite a few hiccups that feel quite out of place, like Open Passageways. I love the instrumentation and the overall aesthetic of the album and I will definitely return to it in the future. I'd consider this album a very strong 7, it had a few songs that threw me off, but it's still solid. Would recommend. Full Review »
