Segall never likes to stay in one place for too long, and his perpetual restlessness shows on Fudge Sandwich, and what a joy that is--11 songs of pure, unadulterated Ty.

As a collection of well-trod leitmotifs, Fudge Sandwich functions more as further folklore in the Segall autobiography than a mere cursory look at the tracklist would suggest.

It's neat to hear Segall's version of these songs--revitalizing them and making them his own--and he certainly offered up a colourful mix.

There's respect but nothing approaching the sort of suffocating reverence that kills so many covers. [Dec 2018, p.22]

Segall didn't write any of the songs on Fudge Sandwich, but these performances are as much his as anything that's come from his pen, and if you still need to be convinced that he's one of the freest and most adventurous minds in contemporary rock & roll, this might just do the trick.

With Fudge Sandwich, Ty breathes new life into an already solid collection of rock songs, and he is an ever-mutating musician on this album as he is in real life.

As the album's title seems to indicate, Fudge Sandwich is a bit of a mess--in a good way. Most of the songs are slathered in thick, distorted guitars, and those that aren't are (like the best covers) retooled with arrangements that fly in the face of their original versions.

If you’re a Segall fan then these open you up to his influences, while also offering more of an insight into an artist who continues to both be reclusive and impressively prolific.

While there's a surprisingly low glam quotient, Fudge Sandwich finds odd harmonies between funk and anarcho-punk, plus more predictable psych. [Dec 2018, p.84]
