They've given up on ugliness for its own sake, trading it in for prettiness, which allows McCracken to rest his throat. [Oct 2004, p.128]
  2. Weird and catchy and unexpectedly funny. [11 Oct 2004]
  3. Equal parts heavenly aural relief and blood tripping, screaming noise.
  4. Songs of self-abuse and suicide - and those are the sunnier moments - are wrapped in wailing riffs, big choruses and fiddly guitar solos.
  5. For the most part, it's standard shouty punk designed to appeal to white male American virgins... Yet, they surprise. [Dec 2004, p.147]
  6. The songwriting is all too callow at times, but McCracken's earnest moments suggest classic-rock romanticism rather than the cathartic self-pity of similarly worked-up young 'uns.
  7. Self-loathing, self-pitying, self-centered, bad-tempered American rock. [6 Nov 2004, p.59]

The Used have been my favorite band for a long time now, and I can honestly say they are without a doubt the most talented song writers ever. Their lyrics are incredible and have helped me get through some of my bad days. I think every album they have done is great (I know all of them by heart) and I will always cherish any music they do. Take It Away (9) The Used is one of my favorite grunge punk bands from my youth even though I'm still kind of young. I like this song alot because of how Bert talks about how he hates light alot because I sleep during the day alot to avoid alot of the crowds and for other various reasons. The dark overtones the band gives off is also a great factor in why I like them and this record.

I Caught Fire (8.5) Even though the beginning guitar sounds a little fonky, I like the chorus to this song alot. The fluctuations in Bert's voice throughout the song especially in the middle end and the end really make the song great for me. The change to a more harmonic in the end of the piece really is a great way to end the song. I think luvy duvy stuff is kind of gay now though so that's why I don't give this song a nine anymore.

Let It Bleed (8) This song has an interesting tempo I think. I really can't process the lyrics that well though. Maybe it's because I'm stupid. The chorus is good though I think and really makes the song good for me. When the piece gets a little more screamo I start to like it better. The cool little guitar sounds created a little after the middle end of the song I think are cool.

All That I've Got (9.25) This song is really great along with the dark 'Alice In Wonderlandish' theme in the music video. I just love the whole main line in the chorus 'I'll be just fine, pretending I'm not,' and how the chorus really makes the song great. I think it really correlates with an emo culture that wants to just feel emotion no matter if it's positive or negative. With that being said, I'm not emo I'm Sith because I am a political moderate and not a leftist. I'm giving the song a 9.25 because of the line above that sticks out in my brain when I listen to the song.

Cut Up Angels (7) While Bert sounds a little weird in the beginning it doesn't bother me because of the bands punk sound. I like how he sings about how he almost lost his head because I can really identify with that line. While I couldn't do any better, there is nothing that really sticks out to me in the song other than the screamo elements.

Listening (7.5) I like how this song keeps the album up pace. The guitar is good with it's consistent chords in the beginning. The song then goes off on a tangent to a degree and continues to repeat the chorus throughout the song. The keyboard sounds and the screaming at the end made me give the song a higher score because I'm nice.

Yesterday Feelings (7) This song is cool I think because it slows the tempo down and shows the listener a new direction in the sound that The Used is trying to get across. I think the acoustics are good and I'm glad they are giving me a break from the heavier sound.

Light With A Sharpened Edge (8.5) This song sounds much more melodic, especially because of the unique guitar sound they use. I really love how the song builds into the chorus. The guitar solo that is delivered is awesome. I was going to give this song an 8 but the title has a reference to a sharp edge so I figured I would be nice because I can relate to it.

Sound Effects And Overdramatics (7.5) The heavy guitar in the beginning caught me by surprise and the screamo is good like usual. The song has good fluctuations which really stick out to me and the solo which is punkish is great especially when the sound of it changes. The screamo gets a little repetitive though but whatever.

Hard To Say (8.5) This song is a perfect example of how talented musicians make a album to get them noticed by a record company, by changing their sound. I really like this track because it's like a love song with punk styles. I just like this sound the band gives off because it actually sounds like they are singing about something. I know they are in the screamo pieces with the heavier guitar riffs, but it's alot harder.

Lunacy Fringe (8) I like the title in this song because I've been called a creep, menace, and whole bunch of bad names for whatever reason. This track continues with a more melodic sound along with minor elements of Piano unless I'm hearing things. The choir sound The Used uses is really great I think and how they incorporate their screamo sound with their more melodic pieces.

I'm A Fake (8.5) This is an interesting rant in the beginning lol X). The song really picks up when the guitars kick in and really makes it sound good. It is a very clean punk sound and I like it alot. I just think what makes this song great is the fast pace and how it closes out the album with good energy not to mention the rant in the beginning.

I'm not reviewing Under Pressure because it was originally by Queen before The Used did the cover.

Simultaneously both an ugly and pretty album. Whilst In Love and Death is drenched in overbearing emotions and metaphors with its lyrical silliness, there remains something poetic and melancholic about the experience. Easily the bands lightest release, these pop-rock tunes manage to stand on their own reasonably well with the choruses of 'Take It Away', 'Listening' and 'Lunacy Fringe' which for all their tear-inducing substance work well in the concept of the album.
