Mar 19, 2021Throw in a long but smartly assembled selection of A-list producer/co-writers that includes Andrew Watt, Skrillex, the Monsterz & Strangers, Louis Bell, Benny Blanco, Finneas and too many more to mention, and it adds up to a Bieber who is actually making smart choices pretty much all around, all of a sudden, sounding like the antithesis of what he admits he once was: “Unstable.” This is a honeymoon that could last.
-
Mar 19, 2021It’s been just over a year since Bieber released his worst album. He’s returned with his best.
-
Mar 19, 2021Bieber appears to have rediscovered his mojo, resulting in one of his most focused projects to date.
-
Mar 19, 2021Justice happily expand its sonic palette with more textures and tempos.
-
Mar 23, 2021His voice has a palatable smoothness; he’s mastered push-and-pull dynamics, and he swings effortlessly from a placid chest voice to a zephyr of a falsetto. That litheness and control are on full display across Justice. Even when the songwriting is spiritless and the production rote—and it occasionally is, as on the confessional “Unstable” and the saccharine “Deserve You”—he still sings the hell out of it.
-
Mar 26, 2021The upshot is that Justice is one of Bieber's steadiest releases, among the easiest to play from start to finish. The only overdone aspect is the low self-esteem and unworthiness the lyrics either suggest or flatly express in almost every song.
-
Mar 22, 2021Overall, Justice is better when Bieber takes the listener to his own room than when he's reading the room. He shines in the most emotional songs ad is competent in making you dance too.
-
Mar 19, 2021A work of subtle progression, its evangelical appeal is dimmed by the familiarity of those colossal singles. As fuel for the continuation of Justin Bieber’s mission, however, there’s much here to reaffirm your faith.
-
Mar 22, 2021Although Bieber created a decent body of work, it's hard to get past that the sentiments of the overall message is skewed by the lack of effort towards creating music that addresses any sort of justice or lack thereof.
-
Mar 22, 2021All in all, he has a pretty solid record of radio-ready hits, some that could double back as hazy, danceable club tracks. But MLK could have been left to rest in peace.
-
Mar 19, 2021The disorganized, only sporadically strong “Justice,” though, feels like a slap on the wrist to “Changes,” or the version of Bieber it nurtured. Rather than settle for one groove, this album shuttles between several.
-
Mar 19, 2021He’s certainly matured as a singer, and navigates these songs impressively, but that doesn’t mean he’s developed much of a vocal identity. He’s only as good as the songs he sings. Fortunately, the album closes with two huge, very different ballads that are perfect for him.
-
Mar 25, 2021With 16 tracks in a wide variety of styles and moods, Bieber’s centerless sixth studio album is noisy and grab-baggy in a way that once was typical for him (and other major pop acts) yet now registers as shallow and unsatisfying.
-
Mar 19, 2021What’s conspicuously absent are the kind of nailed-on pop anthems that peppered Bieber’s best album, the post-breakdown, career-saving Purpose: nothing here approaches the earworm status of Love Yourself or What Do You Mean? And that – rather than its failure to live up to any putative advance billing – is Justice’s biggest problem.
-
Mar 19, 2021The problem with Justice is that Bieber thinks his music is more powerful than it actually is.
-
Mar 21, 2021Funniest pandemic record, hands down.
