Across the record it’s clear that Pillow Queens have truly hit their stride as a band. Leave The Light On strikes the balance between the excitement of an early career and the deliberate precision of seasoned musicians.

Leave the Light On sets its aim as high as possible and rarely misses—fun, vast in its soundscape, it effortlessly takes hold of you with its power. But even in that massive scope, it is surprisingly intimate and humanistic, making it just as thoughtful, if not more so, than Pillow Queens’ debut.

Awash with electric guitars equally as influenced by tradition as cathartic night drives, ‘Leave The Light On’ delves into the power of loneliness. Challenging the definition through both lyrics and sound, Pillow Queens deliberately play with light and heavy.

The tracks ebb and flow, never stopping in a static moment but chasing a thought, an ideal and holding out hope.

While the songs themselves are more uneven, Pillow Queens' sound is fully formed, with tracks including opener "Be by Your Side" hitting on all cylinders.

Leave the Light On often considers the toll of living up to expectations, in romantic, platonic, and societal terms. Unfortunately, you also sometimes get the sense of it with regards to following up a beloved album, with the band revealing a new inclination toward gravitas that smothers some of their fire.

Pillow Queens add a few more extended shredding sessions to the template, but they largely stick within the bounds of this classy, serious style. It’s not one that gives the group a particularly distinctive flavour, but it is at least able to contain all the feelings of confusion, fury, outsized desire and whatever else the listener wants to extrapolate from this evocative if slightly nebulous record.

After the gradual but ultimately big success of the bands debut "In Waiting", there is a decent level of expectation weighing on this. The results are good and fans of the debut will definitely enjoy it as it is similar in style and theme. "Leave the Light On" is arguably a better album as a listen from start to finish. The songwriting has definitely progressed forward especially on the lyrical side of things. On the other hand it lacks the same level of real standout tunes that "In Waiting" had. There is no "Holy Show", "How Do I Look?" of "Liffey" but as I have said already, it's probably a more consistent album and has few if any filler tracks. Expand
