Deadweight is an ominous-sounding opener sugared by some lovely falsetto, while the lilting, reggae-tinged Won’t Follow deals with loss but ends with Gallab sweetly crooning “I feel new”. A compelling reminder of the uplifting power of music.

Life & Livin’ It is a powerful reminder that basic truths, basic rights, are always the most important.

This is an urgent, enormously enjoyable LP.

The result is a tighter and more collaborative sounding effort, and it shows throughout the album from the taught disco-funk of Telephone to the sunny and joyous brass-driven lead single U'huh.

Sinkane has nowhere near the fame he deserves; may this be the album that gives you life.

Life & Livin’ It signs off with a stiff jab to the nose, hinting at what could be if Sinkane’s next journey takes them deeper into the mud.

Born in the UK, based Stateside and of Sudanese descent, Sinkane has been able to draw his worldly experiences into something that's at once relatable, abstract and pertinent.

Compared with his perky previous albums Mars and Mean Love, there’s something underwhelming about this third effort from Ahmad Gallab, aka Sinkane--it feels every bit as pedestrian and dutiful as its title suggests, its slow, methodical grooves pleasantly light but laborious.

His influences are worn lightly, the melodies remain inventive, and there is a real elegance to Sinkane's music. Hopefully next time he'll get back in the driver's seat.
