Minowa, who also produced, dives in with typical gusto, building the album into a sprawling, intricately interconnected 56-minute concept that often soars into emotionally operatic, cathartic heights.

This interplay between extremes has always been Cloud Cult's strong suit; the snaking tempos and sudden rave-ups and ear-jarring bangs have been necessary to balance out the self-serious personal lyrics. Here, the band does well to incorporate tension and volume--you just wish for more of both.

Regardless of the universal, earth-loving edges of this Minneapolis collective's sound (which edges can be trying), what there definitely is in Light Chasers is some supremely beautiful and well-produced music.
