The album preserves--even perfects--the spirit of its delirious debut, while fashioning something even bigger: brighter, tighter, better, more. [No. 95, p.55]

While James Murphy's production skills are missing this time, the songs themselves are still strong. [Feb 2013, p.90]

Love Sign isn't all that different than what shaggy-haired kids were playing at their local live-music clubs circa 1979. The indie-rock buzz is just added perspective.

Free Energy know that what they're emulating is about bliss not meaning, and they're savvy enough to embrace pop simplicity without condescending to it.

Love Sign escapes almost all of the sophomore LP pitfalls.

The follow-up moves the nostalgia dial to that hair-feathering, creepy tank-top-wearing end-of-the-Seventies moment when AOR rock, Cali soft rock, disco and New Wave melted into the same pot of fool's gold.

For a record that never tries to be anything more than a fun rock 'n' roll adventure, Love Sign strolls out unscathed.

It's rare that any of these cut reach the ecstatic heights of their 2010 debut, Stuck On Nothing. [Jan-Feb 2013, p.87]

Love Sign dips a little too far into the Fountains of Wayne kiddie pool.

The slick varnish he [producer John Agnello] slathers on doesn't do this group any favors. Still, the melodies stick to your brain like flypaper.

These songs just lack that certain oomph to separate Free Energy from the thousands of groups who have sang about girls before.

If you can get past that feeling and embrace the polished, shiny surfaces, and satin-jacketed AOR clichés, then Love Sign delivers a pleasing dose of nostalgic, good-time (almost) rock & roll.

Free Energy can put a damn pop hook together--problem is the execution.

Love Sign‘s attempts to update Free Energy’s basic sound to include ‘80s influences is well-intentioned. But like everything else on the album, it only works in fits and starts.

Love Sign's belief in the righteousness of its intentionally big, dumb songs being big, dumb and nothing else ultimately sets Free Energy up to fail.

Free Energy don't break any new ground with their sophomore album, in fact they settle more comfortably than ever into their comfort zone ofFree Energy don't break any new ground with their sophomore album, in fact they settle more comfortably than ever into their comfort zone of big, bright pop rock songs with shiny hooks. Other, more experimental and adventurous groups can take care of the envelope pushing. These rockers are perfectly content churning out music that aims to hit the sweet spot and succeeds magnificently. Full Review »
