Some artists, such as Beck and Khruangbin with their art-funk overhauls of Fund My Way and Pretty Boys respectively, build traditional, if inventive remixes around Macca's vocals. Other go further and basically cover the songs. [Aug 2021, p.83]

It’s always nice when artists sound genuinely excited to participate in a collective project, and that comes through in spades on the delightful, crisply produced, and well-arranged McCartney III Imagined.

Most of these artists strike a rare rework/remix balance, preserving what made the original tick while infusing enough of their own identity to justify the new take.

McCartney III Imagined is a classy set of remixes from assorted studio alchemists that allows Macca to experiment further by proxy.

The likes of Khruangbin, St Vincent, fhoebe Bridgers and Josh Homme spice up Macca’s songs in their idiosyncratic fashion, while a few improve the originals. [Jun 2021, p.28]

Ultimately, this album will draw the attention of McCartney fans and of the artists involved, and will remain a curio for the rest. Yet it’s good to see rock’s ultimate ‘Elder Statesman’ reaching out to a younger generation and trusting them with his material. Not all of McCartney III Imagined works, but when it does it sounds genuinely exciting.

The best is from Phoebe Bridgers, giving the bright, synthy "Seize the Day" a sad-girl makeover. [May 2021, p.76]

It's certainly more interesting than the original, and the artistic freedom the features had is amazing. Some songs are just meh, I expected a lot more from Beck and Blood Oranges, but Phoebe Bridgers, Dominic Fike, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak and Damon Albarn do an amazing work.

This album shows that Paul McCartney can still write great music, even if the production style and performance of his own is dated and uninteresting. (I didn't love McCartney III)

Better than the original. Except for the last song which I prefer on the McCartney release.

I have yet to come across a remix album that I have enjoyed more than the original record. I can't help but compare the versions of songsI have yet to come across a remix album that I have enjoyed more than the original record. I can't help but compare the versions of songs which in itself is probably an unfair start. I reckon if you listen to this before you listen to the source album you will get more enjoyment from it but that is only possible if your late coming to the original. Anyway, this takes a solid record and while not necessarily improving it, it definitely adds something new. The Khruangbin remix of the track "Pretty Boys" is my favourite track and I will be checking out more of that artist based on what I have heard here. To be fair, at least half of the album is decent. Unfortunately the other half of it falls into generic remix territory. Had the album been released in isolation I have no doubt it would be better received. Expand
