More intravenously emotional as Pure Heroine is. This time 70's pop rock influences mixed with contemporary-well-worked-out-pop results in a masterpiece.

Never been a fan of the genre Lorde associates with, but was pleasantly surprised by this one. It is filled with somewhat generic pop-tripes, yet it adds something new in its sensuality and, well, its melodrama.

Anjing woy bagus banget dah nih album. The songs are very rich melodically and the instrumentals are breath-taking. Definitely what we were all waiting for in Pop Music. I love Lorde. But I consider Louvre hideous, that's why I gave a 10. But all the others are heavenly, Sober II, Sober, Homemade Dynamite, Writer in The Dark. Love them all!

Lorde has made her best album yet. This is full with feelings and truth in the lyrics and the music. Melodrama is telling us something sad but at the same time beautiful. My only issue with Melodrama is that two songs have like 30 seconds more that they should but the album is highly recommended.

The album really follow the drama way, good job. It's sad and catchy, but somehow do not feel original for me, the lyrics are deep but too much pop. Good piano arranges.

    Highlights: Sober, Liability.

Veredict: too overrated, good, catchy, but not a masterpiece in any way.

I'm not into Lorde's in-your-face, throaty, borderline out-of-tune talk-singing that she trots out a lot on this album. I prefer her softer, more vocal tasteful approach on tracks like "Supercut" and "Perfect Places". I'd say I prefer her upper register, but she's done her lower register so well in the past, on tracks like "Royals."

Everybody is talking about this because the world knows it worth.
Melodrama is without a doubt the best album released on this year, Its is melancholic and so strong at the same time, something really hard to create, but so enjoyable and unforgettable.

Her strengths in creating spacious, slow atmospheres mostly outweighed her weaknesses within a more contemporary pop sound, but while showing personality the overall interest level was not where it should have been given Lorde's popularity. My Score: 129/180 (Good) = 7.2/10

The instrumentals of the album as well as its structure were thought to involve us in a unique atmosphere of the universe to which the singer lives and with which it communicates. It is undeniable that Lord has an expressive freedom, both musically and corporately in his work and the work brings to the forefront that particularity of the singer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After four years of waiting, Lorde has truly delivered one of the best
    pop albums of 2017.
With an exquisite production, the album holds in its catalogue some unforgettable tunes, from the triumphant opener 'Green Light', to the infectious anthem 'Supercut', which highly resembles Robyn's 2010 hit song 'Dancing on My Own', to the Kate Bush-esque ballad 'Writing in the Dark', or the eerie and orchestral 'Sober II (Melodrama)' that perfectly embodies the "melodramatic" atmosphere of the album, a song that I love to describe as the lovechild of Kanye West and James Blake.
The songwriting on this album does not disappoint as well, Ms. Yelich-O'Connor carving quite some memorable lines in her listeners' mind, such as "I still feel you, now and then/ Slow like pseudo-ephedrine/ When you see me, will you say I've changed?" from the wrenching ballad 'Writer in The Dark", or "I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush/ Drink up your movements, still I can't get enough" from my personal favourite track off this album, "The Louvre".
There are so many lines, so many aspects to dissect from this pop masterpiece, but hey, I'm not a qualified critic, so I'll let the big dogs do their job. One final thing to add, this album has a huge potential of getting an Album of The Year nomination, and even winning. Congratulations, Ella! You've done it again! Collapse

Lorde's Melodrama takes you into a conceptual party of existence infused with all kinds of intense colors and emotions: heart beats of first love encounters, blissful dances that take part accompanied by friends or in isolated spaces, the heat of a heartbreak and what comes with it; overcoming loneliness, the heartache of memoir, wishing for it all to be different and going back and makingLorde's Melodrama takes you into a conceptual party of existence infused with all kinds of intense colors and emotions: heart beats of first love encounters, blissful dances that take part accompanied by friends or in isolated spaces, the heat of a heartbreak and what comes with it; overcoming loneliness, the heartache of memoir, wishing for it all to be different and going back and making it right but not being able to, accepting reality and acquiring comfortability with being by yourself, therefore defining who you are, a self-discovery act. Melodrama indeed offers melodramatic experiences in an excellent art form: one of the most elevated pop music ever made. She manages to cleverly deconstruct pop music while still maintaining the essence of the genre, therefore resulting in unconventional pop music with sugary melodies and capturing pop beats, all arranged with the most careful selection and with high-quality lyrics that evidenciate Lorde's incredible talent as a writer. Whether or not you're going through a break-up, Melodrama suits every single sentimental individual, offering catharsis, an elixir for all the sentimental entanglement. A journey. A life-changing experience. A concept album full of emotions coming from the genius mind of a 20 year old girl. A relationship of 3 years sung as a one-night house party. The forward thinking production and lyrics will give you that rare "I've never heard anything like this before" feeling, Truly magical and hopefully a mark not only on Ella's career but on the music scene.

I'm honestly baffled at the acclaim this album is getting. Now, I certainly don't dislike it, but I also don't really like it either. It's just meh, pretty much. One thing I will say is that even though I think Pure Heroine was a superior album, I'm glad that Lorde went in a different direction with Melodrama. She took some risks and it shows a more mature side of her, which I guess is a good thing. Now here's my track-by-track breakdown:

    1. Green Light - One of the better songs on the album. My only issue is that it starts the album on such an upbeat note, and none of the other songs really match its energy.
    2. Sober - A pretty understated and actually good song. It's got a nice beat and laid-back quality about it.
    3. Homemade Dynamite - Also a pretty decent song.
    4. The Louvre - Probably my favorite song on the album. The hook is very memorable and the chorus is almost like an anti-chorus. I like it.
    5. Liability - Alright, so everything up until this point has been fine, so why the lukewarm review? Well, here's where it starts going downhill. I know people love this song because the lyrics are actually quite good, but the music is just so basic and boring to me. Skip.
    6. Hard Feelings/Loveless - Two songs in one, and both sound like super generic pop songs.
    7. Sober II (Melodrama) - A nice enough melody. This song is alright.
    8. Writer In The Dark - Probably my least favorite song on the album. It sounds very Kate Bush-esque, which normally would be a good thing, but not in this case. It sounds old-fashioned, the melody isn’t interesting, and it’s just annoying to listen to.
    9. Supercut - There are some nice touches to this song, but just like track 6, it sounds like any other pop song. Not my cup of tea.
    10. Liability (Reprise) - Why an 11 track album needs a reprise is beyond me. This is just too boring and slow for my taste.
    11. Perfect Places - Finally we end on a good note. I actually think this is a fun, sort of bittersweet song.

So there you have it. There are some good songs and some not-so-good songs. I’m glad Lorde decided to take a risk, but there are some interesting choices and my overall impression is that this is a sort of unsatisfying album. If there were some truly standout songs like on Pure Heroine I probably would have bumped this up to a 6 or 7.

Way overrated. This album is less cohesive, as the songs dabble in different rhithms doing little to no effort to melt them into believable song structures, instead they're separated in songs or different verses. The only saving grace of this album is it's good lyric writing and Lorde's voice which is the true star, even when sung over ill-inspired beats and cheap Italo disco pianos.

In her sophomore project Lorde explores the emotional journey and aftermath of a house party after a hurtful and emotionally draining break up and presents what is to be the Album of The Year. On a new level of lyrical maturity -- and progression from her debut Pure Heroine -- Lorde sings about the hurting, the partying, the liberation, the one-night stands, the reminiscing, self-care and the perpetual longing for closure and happiness along catchy and yet often melancholic and ecstatic melodies. This record makes you want to dance by yourself on the streets and simultaneously cry in your room alone. The way Lorde deals with solitude from a musical and poetic standpoint is not only beyond her age but also extraordinarily cohesive, differentiated and multidimensional and surpasses all of her pop-contemporaries. You have to listen to this. It is exquisite.

One of my favorite albums of the year. Lorde's lyrics are evocative and emotional, and she perfectly captures the simultaneous boredom and intense desire of youth—dueling concepts that are captured in the notion of melodrama. The thematic elements are a perfect progression from Pure Heroine, which was concerned with glorifying a set of common experiences. Melodrama, on the other hand, mines out the grief and pain that comes with the consumption and glamor she kept at a distance in her first album. The production, too, is simply top notch. It's adjacent to much of current pop, but Lorde transforms the pop formula to a new sound and structure that is totally unique. She's not afraid to make dramatic choices, like including essentially two reprises—"Sober II" and "Liability (Reprise)"—or smashing two seemingly unconnected songs together ("Hard Feelings/Loveless"). Many of the tracks end with long fades or breakdowns that wallow in the emotionality of the song longer than the listener might feel comfortable. The breakdown of "Hard Feelings", with its screechy, almost abrasive synths, pitch-shifted just enough to be unsettling, sounds unlike any pop song this year. These sonic explorations, combined with a vulnerability that her first album lacked, make this a fantastic followup and one of the best records of the year. Expand
