On their third album Mommy, their blistering garage punk is finessed, their songwriting, sharp and sardonic.

Be Your Own Pet have retained the vitality of their youth while leaving behind the baggage.

Hearing Pearl reclaim her agency with an older, wiser, and hopefully more sustainable incarnation of Be Your Own Pet is a thrill for fans old and new.

After a decade apart, Be Your Own Pet are a far better band: explicit, tight, even more inventive.

‘Mommy’ is not an evolution for Be Your Own Pet, it is an affirmation that despite the passing of time, we can still be just as vital as our former selves.

The best moments of the album come when the band get candid about their hardest experiences, all the while leaning into the driving, raw rock sound they were known for.

They're bummed to learn that adulthood breeds more angst than adolescence, which inspires a sharp-edged '70s hard rock, with songs celebrating kink and demanding equal pay and full-body autonomy on "Big Trouble". [Sep 2023, p.23]

Mommy flushes out all the misplaced pressure and instability that defined the group’s first go-round, while making it clear that Be Your Own Pet remain a force to be reckoned with—but on their terms.

Mommy expertly splits the difference between the teen snottiness and insane energy of their 2000s output and a more mature musical and lyrical outlook befitting the passage of time since they last released anything.

Having grown from teenagers to adults during their time away, there isn’t that vibrant, chaotic spark of their past records. In its place is a self-assured swaggering that fits Be Your Own Pet well as they successfully start the second chapter of their career with Mommy.

Be Your Own Pet burned out from having too much fuuuuuun, but by playing around with old influences, Mommy shows they're still nothing but a good time.

The scuzzy guitars, driving rhythms, and yelled vocals are all here, but Mommy fails to recapture the lightning in a bottle that made their initial run so magnetic.

SOLID rock n' roll album. I'd give this an 8.5 rating. Worship the whip, Big Trouble and Hand Grenade are standouts.
