Pondering the loss of innocence, rise of awareness and acceptance over 12 songs and 45 minutes, Lissie demonstrates resilience in the wake of California/stardom’s illusionary appeal.

Producers Curt Schneider and Bill Reynolds from Band of Horses have allowed a space and subtlety that add integrity to Lissie’s lyrics.

My Wild West isn’t without its longueurs, however, the introspection of Together or Apart and Go For a Walk failing to make much impact, but overall this is a fine set of grownup pop songs.

Often these widescreen productions are more effective at the most minimal. [Mar 2016, p.76]

As a songwriter, she continues to have a feel for big, hooky choruses (“Don’t You Give Up on Me”), as well as a tendency to go too broad (“Daughters”). The most sharply etched songs, like “Go for a Walk” (“I want to feel my life”), reveal a singer finding herself.

As good as these moody moments are, My Wild West is best once the darkness settles, and Lissie offers nicely sculpted miniatures that feel alternately comforting and bruised, with the human touches Lana Del Rey works so hard to remove from her own music.

Like most of Lissie’s albums, My Wild West is most compelling at its most messy and raucous.

One think that amazes about her work is that at least half of the songs in every album deserves to be a single and that also goes for "My Wild West". Highlights of the album for me are definitely "Hero" , "Hollywood", "Sun keeps rising" and "Ojai", but really the whole album is amazing. Thumbs up for her brave independent release of the album. I would had no doubts about her artistic authenticity ever since I first listened to "Shameless". And there she is, proving her self real and authentic once again! Thank you Lissie for this great album and for being just who you really are, and not what the "zombies in the corner" (as you name them) want to turn you into!! :-) Expand
