Night Fiction does feel like a fully realized reflection of its creator’s mercurial disposition.

Nugent may not distinguish himself from his influences on Night Vision, but, like fellow guitar slinger Ryley Walker, he couldn't care less. He's only interested in playing the music he likes and growing from what he learns in doing so. In the process, we get a killer rock & roll album.

Nugent makes up for those irritating suburban-blues licks with his exquisite chordings and inspired solos.

It's a bit California slacker, a bit New York dive, a bit Delta blues, and so firs in well enough alongside Woodist alumni like Kurt Vile, Real Estate and Woods. [Jan 2016, p.71]

Night Fiction emerges as an engaging sampler of his range as well as his virtuosity. [Feb 2016, p.78]

His rhythm work is crisp and earthen, not so much pushing forward as flowering outward, the picture of a mind focused on growing and filling out.

Night Fiction is beautifully played, full of the clean, lovely sounds that can be made on traditional rock instruments, but it’s not very memorable.

Although songs such as Things Don’t Change That Fast favourably recall many doleful US barroom bards, voice and words don’t actually improve Nugent, who packs more lyricism in his fingers than most.

The recordings have a live and dirty feel to them, which makes them endearing and easy to cosy up to on the phonograph, even if the songwriting doesn’t always warrant a close headphone listen.
