  • Summary: Professional surfer-turned-rocker Jack Johnson returns with his second LP of mellow alt-rock.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 3 out of 7
  2. Negative: 0 out of 7
  1. While the vocal similarities to jam-band peers [Ben] Harper and Dave Matthews are striking, Johnson's songs are, frankly, more instantly likable than theirs, more tuneful and less earnest. [9 May 2003, p.74]
  2. 80
With On and On, Johnson pushes past those folk- and root-distressed interiors and glides into cool new musical areas. [#16, p.122]
  3. It's sweet and kind of sexy and all that, but clearly designed for those who find John Mayer too challenging.
  4. A sparkling sophomore effort, carefully designed to avoid any kind of critical slump.
  5. 50
He's got many peaceful, breezy songs about peaceful, easy feelings but lacks the hooks to hang 'em on. [Jun 2003, p.109]
  6. With On and On, this Hawaiian surfer's croon evokes the mellow-yellow moan of Donovan but without the weirdness that made that psychedelic folkie compelling.
  7. Oh how it drags. [Aug 2003, p.106]

Although it doesn't have the same catch that Brushfire Fairytales did, I still give it a 10 because it is still an amazing album.
