  • Summary: This is the second album of electronica-meets-indie-pop (falling somewhere between Manitoba and the Postal Service) from Mark Mitchell.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 7 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. [An] extraordinarily unassuming, gorgeous release.
  2. Mitchell is a skilled producer, weaving a tangle of complex melodies and countermelodies, rhythms and accents, into a vibrant tapestry; there's a lot more going on in these songs than you can pick up in one pass.
  3. Clue to Kalo may give acts like Postal Service and Her Space Holiday a run for their money.
  4. Unfortunately, the fairly uniform textures and mid-tempo rhythms obscure how Mitchell plays with pop conventions. [#11, p.114]

Ignore lazy comparisons to 'folktronica' artists: This spectacular album - surely one of 2005's finest - manages to weave disparate musical strands into a gorgeous, singular, work of pop majesty. Rather than thrusting melodies into your face, these songs insinuate themselves gradually into the psyche and then refuse to let go. The album can be enjoyed on so many levels: the gorgeous texture of the sound; the melodies; the programming; the sampled live instrumentation and the lyrical depth all contribute to an album that just keeps on giving.
