Lisa Hannigan is on confident form in her second solo release since the split from Damien Rice.

Solid yet understated, it's Hannigan's obvious gift for melody, tasteful arrangements, and remarkably emotive elocution (when her voice breaks, the heart follows suit) that keeps Passenger afloat, while the world schemes and churns beneath.

For all its deft arrangements and catchy chorus hook lines, Passenger feels unforced, spontaneous and timeless; indeed, such is its unaffected delivery that it might have been recorded 30 years ago or last month

It's a self-assured and very cohesive piece of work. Lisa Hannigan's journey as a solo artist continues to trundle along without any bumps in the road.

Her voice is light and agile, her phrasing like exquisite plumage, and her folksy songs move with deceptive power, sailing on guitars, strings and Irish drama.

A bright and breezy sophomore that occasionally hints at darker themes. [Dec. 2001 p. 127]

Her voice remains the main attraction on this second album but its prettiness often sounds thin against the sort of arrangements that invite the description "plinky-plonky".

Strong follow up to her lovely debut solo record Sea Sew. Lisa Hannigan has a more expansive sound on Passenger but deep down it is a recordStrong follow up to her lovely debut solo record Sea Sew. Lisa Hannigan has a more expansive sound on Passenger but deep down it is a record cut from the same cloth. The songs are very strong, the voice is as good as ever and it's a more lively and in my opinion a stronger record than Sea Sew which got a Mercury Music Prize nomination. Passenger goes further in establishing her as an artist in her own right and has some great singles on it. She has her own style and sound and is growing her own fan base independant of her past musical partnerships with Damien Rice. Another couple of albums like this and it may be a case of Damien Who?
