Pe'ahi sounds like their strongest gallery of timeless anthems so far. [Aug 2014, p. 204]

The result is an atmospheric sound, refined without losing its feisty, sometimes bitter vitality. [Sep 2014, p.98]

Far from diving deeper into the bleak, sonic maelstrom that has characterised most of their work, Pe'ahi is their most open, emotional record to date.

A decade in, this duo is still drawn to the dark side and the beauty lurking beneath it.

It might be easy to take The Raveonettes for granted, or to cast them aside in favor of the latest flavor of the month. Like the rest of their 2010s output, the strength and near-brilliance of Pe'ahi show clearly what a mistake it would be to do either of those things.

Pe’ahi may well have arrived softly, but you can’t criticise the size of its stick, nor its ability to do different and interesting things with that stick.

Pe'ahi's layers of distortion and depression peel back to reveal melodies as sweet and life-affirming as can be.

Despite their varied approach, though, these songs remain pop nuggets with hummable melodies, swathed in layers of distortion but maintaining their sweet appeal underneath.

If Pe’ahi is a tribute to Sune’s father, it’s a warts-and-all portrayal of a turbulent relationship, but one delivered with a tenderness and intensity that propels the very concept of the retro garage duo into a fresh sonic stratosphere. Drop in, it’s an exhilarating descent.

The contrast of light and dark has always driven the Raveonettes’ music, but it’s especially effective on this beautifully realized collection that shows the couple to have plenty of tricks left in their already unique and compelling sonic bag.

Pe-Ahi, despite being entertaining, cries out for something we haven’t heard from them before.

Pe’ahi is an uneven reinvention, but it’s a brave one, too--the manner of its release isn't the only surprise that comes with it.

The diversity of sound the band rolls out on Pe’ahi is certainly refreshing, but it takes a chunk out of the foundation of their career.

Taken out of context of their discography, this is probably a mildly interesting take on noise pop. In context though Pe'ahi is the bandTaken out of context of their discography, this is probably a mildly interesting take on noise pop. In context though Pe'ahi is the band sounding bolder and in a way more streamlined than ever. There is much aggression and layers of noise on just about every track. The more subdued ones are still strong. A very slick, fresh album. Full Review »
