Each of Dehd's album's has been smarter, stranger, and more deceptively complex than the last, and the delightful and adventurous Poetry continues this upward trend.

Their sunny melodies and sincerity go a long way to making their music compelling, and that is the case whether they are playing in their comfort zone or expanding their craft incrementally. Poetry is another stellar effort in Dehd’s development; one can envision greater things for them yet to come.

While the band can’t quite maintain the heady momentum of the album’s first half – it does eventually peter out into samey, mid-tempo indie – Poetry still provides ample proof that its makers are experts at wringing entertainment and emotion from archly resurrected rock history.

It's not a stretch to preemptively label Poetry 2024's record of the summer for the alternative crowd. It's fun, fresh and doesn't take itself too seriously.

They have still remained true to their calling card and brave—and talented—enough to try new things. So while Poetry might not be an avid Dehd-head’s favorite album, I have a feeling it will attract a wider audience. It’s a relatable album, too, one that, for better or for worse, is easily digestible.

The result is worthwhile: Poetry still pulses like summer, but Dehd sounds more cohesive than ever.

Although well executed and tasteful, Poetry is hard to go back to time and again because there’s not a whole lot of substance or edginess. Without the innovation and smart pop style heard on previous releases, Poetry ends up being more pleasurable than satisfying.
