The pleasure isn't in the gimmick or the dress-up, but in the disciplined play of emotion behind them.
  2. Dec 7, 2012
On Privateering, his seventh solo outing, Knopfler has crafted his most ambitious and pugnacious set to date.
  3. Sep 21, 2012
Master of genre purity in R&B, Country and folk, Knopfler shapes each style to his own purpose and personality. [Oct 2012, p.83]
  4. Sep 21, 2012
Knopfler's sueded voice has changed little since his 1980s heyday, and his elegant electric-guitar work sounds better than ever.
  5. Sep 21, 2012
Privateering is arguably Knopfler's strongest solo effort and one which shows off his ability as a guitarist, a vocalist and a songwriter.
  6. Sep 21, 2012
Some of the noisier blues are cheesy, but, in the main, this is a warm, authentic and durable record: the musical equivalent of a well-worn plaid shirt.
  7. 70
Privateering is a rootsy testament to Knopfler’s rich reservoir of influences.
  8. Sep 24, 2012
Tasteful without being sterile, diverse but grounded in Knopfler's melancholy mumble and quicksilver guitar, Privateering is a quietly soulful triumph. [Oct 2012, p.83]
  9. Sep 9, 2013
Privateering is a textbook example of a mixed bag--frustrating.

His best solo effort to date. So many great songs, impeccable guitar by MK plus his band is just so good. Saw him with Dylan recently. Knopfler and his band stole the show. I'm so glad he is continuing to write excellent songs and perform them live. He's a treasure. Full Review »

Saw him with Bob Dylan this week in Philly. He and his fantastic band put on a great show. He played many songs from this wonderful record. Go buy this. It's diverse and really shows off his skills as a singer, writer and player. Did I mention that the band is great? Full Review »

Saw excerpts from this on tour w Bob Dylan recently. Absolutely fabulous. I referred to it as Van Morrison on steroids (in a good way). Crazy good songs, each person accompanied with various obscure folk instruments etc. Definitely recommend this one. Full Review »
