Remain in Light comes bursting out of the gates in a rollicking, irresistible wave of musical joy that only stops when the album is over, leaving the listener in a state of blessed disbelief.

This album is a stunning, multivalent piece of artistry that hits an anxious and weary world like a light-bearing gift. Remain In Light is one of the most fascinating albums in rock history, and Angélique Kidjo may have just released the definitive version. [Aug 2018, p.56]

By taking on Remain in Light, Kidjo brings her finely honed Afropop sounds to one of the 1980s' most iconic new wave albums, packing just as much of a punch as the Talking Heads ever did--no small feat for most, but all in an album's work for Angélique Kidjo.

Kidjo’s Remain In Light, now arriving in studio form, is a stunning transformation that sheds the nervous, alien nature of these well-worn songs, turning them into something more human, danceable, and, in some cases, more meaningful.

Kidjo is faithfully following her muse in search of transcendence. Here she’s found a rich source of it, like water flowing underground.

She’s bringing a perspective which is often fascinating, but never less than interesting.

The most fun comes, unsurprisingly, on the funkier first side. [Jul 2018, p.93]

The results are funkier than anything Byrne or Eno might have imagined almost 40 years ago. [Jul 2018, p.30]

Kidjo finds her own way into these songs, infusing them with a tactile sense of empathy.

There are no failures, but the back half of Kidjo’s Remain in Light feels too safe. Kidjo’s Remain in Light doesn’t surpass its predecessor, but at its best, it’s an equally thrilling examination of the still relevant questions that drove Byrne and company almost 40 years ago.

Overall, the album’s songs feel fuller and less wiry in Kidjo and her collaborator's hands. In many respects, the differences aren’t radical, if only in the sense that the band’s influences are so pronounced on the original album. But that said, there are moments that are almost unidentifiable.
