What we get with Skins is a mildly pleasant album that's easy on the ears, and is utterly predictable.

They write about what they know. Once that was dashed hopes and broken hearts, now its families and what sounds like pages from a diary. [Apr 2011, p.104]

Alternative rock from the '90s might be much maligned in the current indie-centric music world, but to paraphrase Jon Stewart as he once introduced the band on his '90s talk show: I like good music and this is good music.

Happily, it makes a good go of bucking the trend here and there, with singer Bill Janovitz's full-throated delivery investing his words with the kind of gritty undercurrent of self-loathing and inner torment that makes Skins jolt with bursts of fresh energy.

It's admirable that the band has committed to a second act of their career and have challenged themselves by tackling more grown-up issues in their songwriting, but Skins doesn't offer much more than a doggedly likable set of straightforward rock songs.

I have to admit my bewilderment as to who gets these jobs to review music. I'm looking at these morons that gave this CD a 60 rating andI have to admit my bewilderment as to who gets these jobs to review music. I'm looking at these morons that gave this CD a 60 rating and think that in between their shallow existence and people telling them what new CD is great instead of them figuring it out for themselves that not only is music in the most dismal state ever but the reviewers should be dropped into the Marianas trench. This Buffalo Tom album is as good as anything they've put out in years. With all the mediocre music that is out there we're very fortunate to have a group of guys that still care about releasing a whole CD without any fillers. These guys just write great music.
