Digging into Robert Pollard is an invigorating bit of fun, and it's what's made the man a success. By all accounts, Space City Kicks is more of exactly that.

If this was meant to be an experiment in art rock, it's an admirably efficient one, and it rocks out, too.

Pollard and company seem especially unfiltered when it comes to ideas, yet unusually patient in bringing them to life.

Engaging and strikingly diverse throughout, Space City Kicks is everything you've come to expect from Pollard, for better or for worse.

Space City Kicks may remind us that Pollard spawned thousands of followers in the lo-fi and power-pop arenas, but it also assures that--even when he's not at his absolute peak--he is head and shoulders above his acolytes.

It's just we know there's more to this guy than this sluggish, lifeless material.
