This is a gratifying second step from one of the most exciting contemporary R&B artists to appear during the 2010s.

Most of this album moves with slowness and throbbing deliberation that focuses the ear and adds urgency to Mr. Alsina’s confessions. It’s also poignant for its intimacy.

Alsina’s narrative-driven niche is criminally underrepresented on the pop charts right now. Judging by the way he effectively turns his wounded past into the catalyst for a bright future--he has potential to dominate the lane.

Testimony brings rap's raw nerve detail to the sturdy slow jam, nullifying the need for nods to R&B of the "rap and bullshit" variety.

Finding the balance between sex, love, and ratchet, Testimony is truly a testament to a new era in R&B that shifts safe lyrics to smooth street tales.

August actually tells a story unlike other singers who rely on sexual records to make them relevant. The entire album is fantastic but the key tracks are Testify, Make It Home, You Deserve, Porn Star, Kissin' On My Tattoos, Benediction, and Numb. The features are pretty good for a debut album Rick Ross, Jeezy, Chris Brown, and more. Full Review »
