This is a record that begs patience and understanding of its listener, but for those that put in the time required, it offers the most bountiful emotional rewards of Nandi Rose’s career yet. This is an album for being lost, as well as healing. Much like its title, it is what you need it to be.

The rich orchestral compositions on The Caretaker sound effortless and fluid like cursive. In crafting such complex, accessible songs, Rose reveals just how ordinary it is to feel at war with yourself, to not know what you want or how to get it.

With The Caretaker, Rose is finding strength in self-discovery and returning to the present with delicate repose.

A body of work constructed, thoughtfully, gracefully, intelligently, serious without ever becoming cynical, dealing deftly and lightly with subject matter that might become leaden in less capable hands.

Like the lush and overgrown summer backyard that Rose awaits, The Caretaker’s underbrush can get thick and thorny but lifts up fragrant rewards as well. As with all worthwhile works of art, the album doesn’t make for a passive listen. If you give The Caretaker the attention it deserves it will slowly yield itself over to your appreciation.

Understandably, The Caretaker’s stories are often not pretty sights, even if the music always is.

The album's refracted harmonies, fluttering synths and off-klter beats are sometimes unsettling, sometimes in deceptive, sensual communion. [May 2020, p.27]
