The major problem with this record: too much hype. On the strength of the review from "The Source" and endless hyping from BET, many people are saying that this record is a classic. It is not. I happen to agree with many of the critics who are tired with Kim endlessly putting The Notorious BIG's lyrics in her raps--she's done it before, and it's a tired gimmick. I happen to agree with many of the critics who are tired with Kim endlessly putting The Notorious BIG's lyrics in her raps--she's done it before, and it's a tired gimmick. I also don't like the way that Kim mismanaged all the guest stars on her album--they either underperform or they're non-existant on the record. I also lament the loss of Kim's flow on various tracks ("Lighters Up," which is not that honest in my opinion because I thought Kim moved to LA years ago--I consider it a poor man's version of "Welcome to Jamrock," "Quiet" where she bites Eminem's flow). Her BIG-esque flow is still there, however, but this time around, she wants to play around with other styles of rapping and Kim doesn't quite manage to pull it off. And yes, I hate to hear about Kim's personal problems as if she's not to blame as well as her atypical drugs/money/sex lyrics found on every one of her albums. I just can't get past seeing this album as what it is--an average, run-of-the-mill rap album. There have been other female MCs (mainstream and independent) that have put out better material than "The Naked Truth" without stooping to the lows that Kim does on her latest LP. Expand

  1. This album is as fake as Kim’s physique, as vapid as the fashion she flaunts, as undeservedly praised as her entire career.
  2. Though hardly in the running for rap album of the year, there's plenty to recommend "The Naked Truth". Yet equally, there's an abundance of wearing phone skits, phoned-in guest performances and shameless fillers to get in the way.

Her very-real-life drama has inspired some of her most focused work... and also some of her worst. [21 Oct 2005, p.75]
