Andy Shauf’s new songs are fictional but feel oh so real, especially if you live in Toronto and even more especially if you live in Parkdale and frequent Skyline, the diner where most of the Toronto-based musician’s new album takes place. ... There are new melodic and rhythmic risks taken.

Shauf's ability to imbue his characters with plenty of nuance, quirk, charm and flaw in brisk scenes is impressive enough, but his need to craft full worlds around them put him head and shoulders above his peers.

The Neon Skyline is another pleasant journey lovingly crafted by Shauf. He has once again proven himself to be up there with maple syrup, Ryan Gosling and Schitt’s Creek as one of Canada’s greatest exports.

Using minimal detail, the individual songs work both separately and as chapters of a larger piece. Shauf performed, arranged, and produced every song on The Neon Skyline. Thus, there is a unity to the whole affair—and a tenderness.

Even at his most open, there's still this sense that his character-driven songs wouldn't exist without revealing the backstory of his Canadian roots. His sentiments are more palpable and poignant, but his approach is as casual as always.

The Neon Skyline stands up as a great collection of moodily atmospheric songs. [Mar 2020, p.120]

Shauf is as musically jaunty as Josh Rouse. [Mar 2020, p.92]

Just a stellar record from a artist that's certainly earned all his accolades and more than lives up to the billing.

The album stays true to its story, with every verse building on the last, and when you ultimately realize the back story to the breezy pop of "Try Again", the song morphs from a light romp to a deep meditation on relationships and how we treat and disappoint eachother. "The moon" had me in tears on my first close listen to the album. Really a treat. Expand

From the first note your'e taken on a journey of a simple story with lots of emotional moments. TNS is equally as good when digested with headphones, as singles on a playlist, or as background music. This will definitely be one of the best albums of 2020. Top Tracks: Fire Truck, Neon Skyline, Things I Do, Living Room Expand

A nice trip through Andy Shauf's melodies. The album shines thanks to its accessibility, its charisma and its little peculiarities that stand out the artist. Sometimes its Indie kind of Country falls in a very slow rhythm where there's not a relevant presence of sensibility, nevertheless, there is some seriousness in the energy of his music that can be enjoyed in several songs. Produced by Philip Shaw Boba y Rob Schnapf, manage to take care of the style of the artist and add friendly details that create attractiveness that will smoothen the mood of those who listen.
