  1. The Sun Awakens is the record he's been promising. Where School of the Flower was a leap, placing his singing and guitar playing in equal measure -- though there were numerous instrumental pieces -- The Sun Awakens is the place they burst forth, fully entwined, completely formed.
  2. Under The Radar
    90
As a whole, the songs presented on The Sun Awakens come across as a work of art, evoking a response and then either building or contrasting to it. [#14]
  3. The opening seven tracks on The Sun Awakens are probably the strongest sequence of songs on any Six Organs release so far.
  4. If you've ever been intrigued by the sound of the sun imploding, this should be your cup of hemlock.
  5. Uncut

A mighty blend of doomy, Jansch-ish meander and sepulchral drones. [Jul 2006, p.92]
  6. Q Magazine
    80
    It's hugely rewarding. [Jul 2006, p.118]
  7. The Sun Awakens' sparseness has a deepness to it that requires spending time with the album in its entirety in order to truly understand it.
  8. Alternative Press

Finds [Chasny] in peak form. [Aug 2006, p.224]
  9. If you were hoping for a predictable outing from Ben Chasny, you won't find it on The Sun Awakens.
  10. The Sun Awakens" is best described as a doom-folk record, encompassing the thick sludge of hyperdistorted electric guitar as well as the rattle and vibration of double-stopped riffs from his acoustic guitar.
  11. Equally stands as Six Organs' most accessible and complex collection to date.
  12. Spin
    70
Recall[s] the most disturbingly surreal moments of a David Lynch film. [Jul 2006, p.87]
  13. Mojo
    60
The Sun Awakens isn't wildly different (from its predecessor)--though it introduces tripped-out electric guitars to Chasny's homespun palette. [Jul 2006, p.102]
  14. Sure, there are flashes of undeniable brilliance, but most certainly not the full wattage of the awakening sun as advertised--far from the record Chasny's capable of making.
  15. Half of The Sun Awakens is vigorous and wonderful; half is abhorrent and stultifying.

Most people wouldn't understand music like this. "Rivers of Transfiguration" is a 24 minute epic and the most interesting songs Most people wouldn't understand music like this. "Rivers of Transfiguration" is a 24 minute epic and the most interesting songs I've heard. I love it. When the snare drum just juts in as if it were a gunshot I can't help but get shivers. If you ilke experimental stuff or cool folk stuff then this a must have. Full Review »

This album is dark, desperate, and tense. It buids and builds but never releases, and it is also the loudest Six Organs record ever. Japanese This album is dark, desperate, and tense.
