Oct 5, 2018"Gravity" works well as a representative track from the 14 great songs on True Meanings. There's a simple, folky acoustic guitar laying the groundwork, while sumptuous strings – never overbearing – lift the song into emotional areas previously unexplored by Weller. And his voice, that burnished, soulful instrument of his, has never sounded better or wiser.

Sep 27, 2018True Meanings is, on the surface, a traditionally introspective singer-songwriter record, but such a reductive description runs the risk of underselling a package that contains some of the most accessible, thought-provoking and downright enjoyable music of his lengthy career. The vibes are resolutely bucolic, embellished just the right amount by a chamber orchestra.
-
Sep 25, 2018It will be intriguing to see where he heads next on his musical tour, adapting as he does to different styles, though time and again the music of True Meanings feels like the most naturally sourced for him as an artist now. It is very much a case of a little less being a whole lot more.

Classic Rock MagazineSep 18, 2018This is unquestionably Weller's most personal and most heartfelt record in years. [Oct 2018, p.88]
-
Sep 17, 2018Weller sounds at ease with this more introspective material, the lush orchestration acting as a perfect foil to his voice.
-
Sep 14, 2018All the strings and brass not only accentuate the songs, highlighting the jazzy changes of "Soul Searchers" or the light swing of "Gravity," they help frame this measured song cycle, directing attention to how Weller isn't wallowing, he's meditating upon love, loss, and hope as he enters his sixties.
-
Sep 14, 2018True Meanings tends to blend into a lilting mush over the course of 14 tracks that rarely stray from the beige end of the sonic palette.
-
Sep 14, 2018Forty-plus years into his career, the Modfather has once again ripped up his own playbook--and released a singular album.
-
Sep 14, 2018On turning 60, the reluctant nostalgist finally allows time for some reflection, with a set of dreamily autumnal, wistful, even melancholy songs.
-
Sep 14, 2018The toughness of Weller's art remains fully present here. An album of beauty and depth, True Meanings is further affirmation of a particularly sincere and probing talent, for whom music is a vocation rather than a career.
-
Sep 13, 2018A record with some rich layers and embellishments, but you sense that the excess of outside influence might be making up for something.
-
Sep 13, 2018The songs here are frequently gorgeous in their arrangement and production, but they’re not the kinds of tunes you’re likely to find stuck in your head. Rather, Weller’s 14th album is a striking display of his range as a writer and performer.
