This album is great and shows what Travis Scott is capable of as an artist and a producer, however the downside to the album is the features. In my mind, i feel like at times this album does sound like what a Rodeo Part 2 would sound like, but all in all i guess this is the closest we will ever get to that. I DO NOT hear Owl Pharaoh or D.B.R. Vibes, at all whatsoever. The hype will carry this project just like everything else Travis Scott does but that doesn't take away from the music being presented, as i feel like this is honestly some of Travis Scott's best work. I want to give this album a 8.5/10 but Metacritic doesn't have .5 grades, so I will officially give this a 9/10 based of first week listen. [NOTE: This review will be elaborated & extended over time - This review was based on 6 FULL Listens since launch day and will be edited with a Track by Track breakdown in the near future, especially after i get the entire list of Features and Production Credits & also after I receive the actual album packages in the mail.] Expand

With an ensemble of collaborators it shows off Mr. Websters keen eye for curation that allows for him to widen not only his horizons but more importantly his scope.

Quite a collective piece making the thought of returning to singular tracks rather than the entire 19 tracks a regrettably dissatisfying experience. It's the tracks where Scott's voice is most distinctive rather than borrowed that the songs embed themselves more meaningfully in my head and stick out. Like the m.i.a indebted "sirens" that sounds like a death march towards victory reminiscent to "Blackskinhead" in its stomping beats. Or the "Renaissance " sequel "Delrestro " that takes it's house and ballroom influences in an intresting direction under the leadership of Yonce' . Even the Whole Lotta Red that streaks through "Fien!" 's mantra evoke a similar unease. Bon Iver's croon is a staple her too as it had been in 2013. Adding a deserved darkness to every feature even when coalesced with Sampha.

An exciting though safe record of tried experiments are given credence by Scott's ear for what sounds great rather than good. I definitely will be returning to this dense piece with hopefully growing reverence each play.

People have complained for years that Travis has always been carried by his features and production, he was easily the highlight of the album, rapping his ass off like he's never done before, and producing all but 3 songs on this album. And the features were great too from Drake's menacing diss to Pusha T on Meltdown, to SZA's angelic singing on Telekinesis, I would also like to talk about that, the fact that Future Sounds made the album at all, especially this late into the album was really great, and that he even added a leak from a decade ago onto the album, along with the numerous Kanye samples and overall influence, leads me to say that this is a 10/10 album. The 5 year wait ultimately results in recycled features, lack of song structure/direction, minimal cohesion throughout the project with songs like kpop, modern jam, I know, parasail, skitzo and a few more. A lot of the project sounds like kanye, there's a fine line between influence and copying. Every time the project tries to hold itself together the next song crumbles it, this makes the duration too long to enjoy a thorough re-listen from top to bottom. Worst part is that the album as a whole has very little replay value, I will regularly go back to 3/19 songs....which is not enough of quality amongst the quantity. I really wanted this album to be great but I'll be going back to rodeo & astroworld to enjoy his work. Expand

After years of waiting you probably expected a mind-blowing project, instead it has a bit of a mess. Building a utopia of life, feelings, and thoughts is complex, and even if you engage Queen Beyoncé, emerging star The Weknd, and numerous raps, it doesn't always take off. The writing remains a cornerstone and is appreciated in the metaphors and word embeddings. But the production remains muddled.

While it may not delve into intellectually stimulating lyrical narratives, this fact should be well-established considering the current juncture of the artist's career. The collaborative features on the album contribute harmoniously, enhancing the overall composition, yet tactfully refraining from overshadowing the primary artist, Travis Scott, who undeniably retains his position as the album's crowning jewel.

Nevertheless, it's important to acknowledge that this opus is not without its imperfections. Tracks such as "K-POP," "TOPIA TWINS," and "PARASAIL" seem to deviate from the established tone and vibe of the album, failing to establish a distinct individual presence. These tracks come across as feeble and conventional, leaving one to ponder the rationale behind their inclusion within the album's framework.

Despite these shortcomings, the album manages to captivate with its remarkable exuberance and amusement. It presents itself as an immensely enjoyable auditory experience, inviting listeners into a realm of sonic pleasure and entertainment.

This might be the best album he's made so far. He's rapping like the rent is due on this album and the whole thing just sounds amazing it's almost perfect.

After five listens, the euphoria of the experience wears off and leaves little to nothing behind other than respect for Scott's prowess as a producer. For someone who became known for the memorable melodies of Antidote, Butterfly Effect, Wonderful, and more, it's odd that not a single song on this album-- including his first single K-POP-- has a memorable hook within ear shot. An artist like Travis Scott, who prefers vibes over substance, depends on these hooks to make his music viable, which makes me wonder what the shelf life of Utopia will be over the long haul. Overall, it's visceral experience worthy multiple listens, but I do wish the songwriting was more memorable. I do predict however that the songs from his first three projects will outlive anything on this album. Expand

A totally Yeezus-inspired album, what impresses me most about this album is how Travis has evolved his production to a godlike level. All the tracks are perfectly produced, giving off that dark and heavy and insane vibe.

After a couple of listens, I would agree and say, this has grown on me. Haven't played different songs other than his other tracks outside Utopia. I love how unique the album is, how he experimented with most of the tracks that can be comparable to Yeezus. Very few misses but 21 Savage did not.

My personal favorite tracks: HYAENA MY EYES MELTDOWN FEIN I KNOW TOPIA TWINS TELEKINESIS TIL

I'm so glad this album took the direction it did, even the Kanye influence. After 5 years of waiting, Travis produces a soundscape so fresh people are left wondering to the vibrations playing in their ears. Don’t get me wrong, the production is pretty good, but the lyrics seriously lack identity. This used to be what I was most excited about, the fact that you didn’t know what to expect from the first song to the next, it was all much more unique and original - crazy hooks, addictive choruses. As you compare “Utopia” to Travis Scott’s earlier work, you can’t help but feel disappointed of what it could have been. It’s like he pulled a Jay-Z in lyrics department, by coming up with the lyrics on the spot, but it differs to Jay-Z, because Jay-Z could make it amazing, Travis clearly can’t. He’s lucky that his production is top notch, because that’s what’s carrying this album to above irrelevancy. To think that he had 5 years to work on this album, and this bland material is what he ended up with, says a lot about his artistry. It seems he only focused on production and hoped everything else would form by itself. Seems more like a money grab, than actual effort, where is the hunger?! This is unfortunately what happens to a lot of artists when they make it big, they don’t bother as much compared to earlier work, because they already got the house, cars and girl they want. What a joke. Expand

Did not disappoint, the different sounds in the album all come together beautifully, the transitions are amazing and they make excellent entertainment to listen to as an album or as part of a playlist. The theme is more vague than the other albums, but that's part of the appeal for me.

Some of the best production I have heard in a long time. My Eyes is the best sounding track of the year and I don’t think it’s close but the depth of the album is lacking in every direction. Doesn’t have a strong message or the best of anything whether it be rager music or trap beats. Still enjoyable but nowhere close to his best work. 6/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The album is a great example of fantastic production and mixing with incredible performances from Travis and the featured artists. Some of the highlights are the beginning of Hyaena, the beat switch in Thank God, Teezo feature in Modern Jam and and the SZA feature in Telekinesis. The only reason it isn't a 10 is because the album is front-loaded, with the better songs being in the first 10 tracks (except Telekinesis, I Know and Til Further Notice), and some later tracks such as Looove and K-POP being disappointin, one for being too experimental, and one being as a weak attempt at garnering attention. I am grateful for Utopia not being a copy and paste Astroworld, and this may be recency bias, but I enjoy more Travis Scott's new project. Expand

Nevertheless, while it’s difficult to get past the wording of Travis Scott’s “Astroworld” follow up, the instrumental completeness and overall energy is difficult to forget.

There are experiments with ambience, risky beat switches, theatrical and hook-free pop, and orchestration that Scott has never attempted before. The multi-platinum guest features might set the album up for global conquest, but the most exciting moments come when it sounds like Scott is discovering a new way to push his craft forward.

The beats sometimes bang in typical trap fashion, like on Topia Twins or Meltdown, but are not afraid to go surreal and alien.
