Where “Astroworld” brought spectacle, “Utopia” brings subtlety and innovation.

A record that stretches the boundaries, ‘UTOPIA’ feels like his finest hour.

Overall, arriving nearly five years removed from his prior studio album, UTOPIA sees Scott stay true to his style, his preferences, and his principles, going against the grain of the tendencies in the viral-hungry world that is 2023 rap.

He seems less concerned with what he’s saying than with the emotion and feeling his music conveys. It’s a bit of a lopsided approach, but few in today’s hip-hop landscape can truly be considered an auteur the way Scott is. While his artistic vision may be a shaky one, there’s no denying that Utopia, bumps and all, is one hell of a ride.

Even if the album sometimes feels thematically hollow, Utopia is still one of the most forward-thinking mainstream releases of the year. Scott is still pushing the boundaries of his psychedelic trap sound after ten years in the industry, and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.

By going back to the sound of his early work, Scott steps back into the gargantuan shadow of his mentor. Kanye West – particularly the mechanical abrasiveness and fragmented textures of 2014’s ‘Yeezus’ – is not just an inspiration but an apparition that looms over Scott’s identity on this album.

He's a canny grounding force, and has a sharp ear for bringing together seemingly disparate ingredients. Utopia could have used more of that sure hand.

An admirable algamation ofTravis Scott's Utopia is a dark hectic dystopia erected in the shadows of both his mentors best and worst outputs. An admirable algamation of the harsh minimalism of Dondas faith and the crass experiments of the iconoclastic Yeezus, Utopia balances those contrasting sonic landscape incredibly well on his stacked resurrection. With an ensemble of collaborators it shows off Mr. Websters keen eye for curation that allows for him to widen not only his horizons but more importantly his scope.

Quite a collective piece making the thought of returning to singular tracks rather than the entire 19 tracks a regrettably dissatisfying experience. It's the tracks where Scott's voice is most distinctive rather than borrowed that the songs embed themselves more meaningfully in my head and stick out. Like the m.i.a indebted "sirens" that sounds like a death march towards victory reminiscent to "Blackskinhead" in its stomping beats. Or the "Renaissance " sequel "Delrestro " that takes it's house and ballroom influences in an intresting direction under the leadership of Yonce' . Even the Whole Lotta Red that streaks through "Fien!" 's mantra evoke a similar unease. Bon Iver's croon is a staple her too as it had been in 2013. Adding a deserved darkness to every feature even when coalesced with Sampha.

An exciting though safe record of tried experiments are given credence by Scott's ear for what sounds great rather than good. I definitely will be returning to this dense piece with hopefully growing reverence each play.
